Spry Owen Claytor was an American dentist and Rear Admiral in the United States Navy. He served as Chief of the United States Navy Dental Corps from June 1950 to January 1, 1952.[2]


Early Career[edit]

Spry Owen Claytor was born in Prince Frederick, Maryland, on December 16, 1889 to Alexander Randall Claytor and Nannie Duke Claytor.[3] He attended Newark (Ohio) High School and the Army-Navy Preparatory School in Washington, DC. In 1917, he graduated from the George Washington University, Dental School, Washington.[3] He taught at the school breifly,[4] before joining the Corps 20 December 1917.[5] before joining the United States Navy Dental Corps in

He was appointed Assistant Dental Surgeon, with the rank of Lieutenant, junior grade, in the Dental Corps, United States Navy, to rank from October 16, 1917.

Navy Career[edit]

His retirement ceremony was held on 29 December 1951, and Admiral Claytor was placed on the retired list January 1 1952.[7]

Along with Alfred W. Chandler and Clemens V. Rault, Spry O. Claytor was promoted to rear admiral in 1947.[6] All three would serve as the Chief of the Dental Corps.
