Andrew Allison "Andy" Haldane (August 22, 1917–October 12, 1944) was a United States Marine Corps officer who was killed by a sniper's bullet during the World War II Battle of Peleliu. The story of his actions during World War II are to be featured in the 2009 HBO miniseries The Pacific War.

Biography[edit]

Andrew Allison Haldane was born on August 22, 1917 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1941 and while there was captain of the football team and president of the student council.[2]

In World War II, Haldane fought in the Pacific theater and was awarded the Silver Star for his action at Cape Gloucester in January 1944.[2][1] In 1944, on Peleliu, Haldane was killed by a Japanese sniper bullet.

In October of 1948, Haldane's body was shipped home from the cemetery on Peleliu and was reburied in Arlington National Cemetery.[3][4]
