I am Dr. John Grohol, an online mental health and psychology expert. I got my start in the online world via BBSs in the 1980s and the Internet in 1991. I started the first index of mental health support groups online in 1992, which was published regularly on a variety of Usenet newsgroups. I also was responsible for the reorganization of the sci.psychology newsgroup hierarchy in the early 1990s. I was one of the senior editors at the Open Directory Project, before the internal strife of that project became too much to take.

In 1995, I published the indexes of mental health support groups and other resources on my website, Psych Central. I also began the first mental health portal of such information called Mental Health Net, also in 1995. After four years of developing that resource, I left and helped drkoop.com develop its mental health center. After a run of startups I was involved in, including one of the first successful online therapy clinics (HelpHorizons.com), I did consulting work for nearly 2 years for Steve Case's Revolution Health. In 2006, I left that concern to focus full time on my website, Psych Central, which I continue to oversee and run on a daily basis. It is now one of the largest and most respected resources online for mental health information, resources, and support groups.
