Kartiki Gonsalves (born 2 November 1986) is a documentary filmmaker from India. She is best known for directing The Elephant Whisperers, a documentary about the strong bonding between an indigenous couple and an orphaned baby elephant. She specialises in nature and wildlife photography and has been recognised by Sony as an Artisan of Imagery India.

Career[edit]

Kartiki Gonsalves is a Sony Artisan of Imagery India since 2020, specialising in nature and social documentaries.[1] She gives workshops on nature and wildlife photography[2] and has conducted tours of Bangalore and Mysore cities.[3] She travels widely for her work. An early photography trip was kayaking off the coast of Vancouver in 2007 to film killer whales.[4] Her photographs have been published in travel and photography magazines.[5][6]

Kartiki made her debut as a film director with the documentary The Elephant Whisperers. Set in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in South India, the film covers the bond that develops between an indigenous couple and a baby elephant, Raghu, who was put into their care. The film premiered in November 2022 in the Doc NYC Film Festival, the largest festival of documentaries in the United States.[7][8][9] The Elephant Whisperers was released globally by streaming service Netflix on 8 December 2022.[10][11]

The Netflix Woche website described it as the best of the most fascinating nature documentaries on Netflix.[12]

Personal life[edit]

Kartiki is the younger daughter of Timothy A. Gonsalves and Priscilla Tapley Gonsalves. She has one older sister, Danica Gonsalves.[13]
