Christian Svarfvar (born March 22, 1982) is a Swedish violinist.

Early life and education[edit]

Christian Svarfvar's musical journey commenced within a household of musicians, guided by his father, Sven-Ole Svarfvar, former 1st Concertmaster of the Norwegian Opera and Swedish Chamber Orchestra.

Initiating his violin studies at the age of five through the Suzuki method, Svarfvar's prodigious talent quickly manifested. At the age of twelve, he made his solo debut with the Mendelssohn violin concerto alongside the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, marking the inception of his musical education.

At thirteen, he commenced private lessons under Professor Henryk Kowalski.[1] A defining chapter in his education unfolded at the age of fifteen, as he spent a transformative summer semester at Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music. This experience paved the way for his acceptance into the prestigious Stockholm Royal College of Music where he studied under Professor Henryk Kowalski for four years. Subsequently, he undertook the Soloist Diploma program under the guidance of Professor Per Enoksson, culminating in his jubilant graduation performance of Carl Nielsen's violin concerto with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and Conductor Hannu Lintu.

Continuing his quest for musical proficiency, Svarfvar pursued a master's degree at the renowned Juilliard School, studying with Professor Robert Mann, and graduating in 2005.

In the realm of his professional career, Christian Svarfvar ascended to prominence following his appointment as a "rising star" by the European Concert Hall Organization.

A standout example of his commitment to contemporary compositions is his premiere performance of Howard Shore's violin concerto, "Eastern Promises," conducted by the composer himself. This exceptional rendition, delivered alongside the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, showcased Svarfvar's versatility and artistry. Howard Shore, a distinguished three-time Oscar-winning composer renowned for his work on cinematic masterpieces including "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and "The Hobbit," attested to the exceptional caliber of Svarfvar's musical prowess.

Personal life[edit]

In his personal life, Christian Svarfvar is the offspring of his father, Sven-Ole Svarfvar, a concertmaster, and his mother, Ulla Marianne Svarfvar, a violin pedagogue. He also shares a sibling, Camilla Svarfvar, who has established herself as a professional violist within the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Furthermore, Christian is a devoted father to his son Julian, born in 2016, and makes his home in the city of Stockholm.
