Samantha Bailly, born on 16th November 1988, is a French author, scriptwriter and videographer. She was the president of La Charte des auteurs et des illustrateurs jeunesses (English: The Charter of Children's Authors and Illustrators), from 2017 to 2019, and the president of La Ligue des auteurs professionnels (English: The professional authors’ association), from 2018 to 2021. She is the cofounder of Parenthèse, a location that combines sustainable tourism and creativity in the Orléans forest.

Biography[edit]

At the end of literary studies course, Samantha Bailly obtained a master’s degree in comparative literature and a master’s in applied letters in editorial techniques and professional writing[1]. In addition to her studies, she works for the studio game company Ubisoft[2].

Her first novel La Langue du silence (English: The language of silence) was re-released by the Editions Bragelonne under the title Oraisons (English: Prayers). It received the Imaginales des lycéens prize in 2012 and the Jeunesse Marais Page 2011 prize[3].

As an author of fantasy, realistic contemporary novels, fairy tales, and manga and films scripts, she traverses all the genres that challenge her imagination. Her major project is creating a fresco of works on her generation and its relationship to reality. In 2014, the novel Les Stagiaires (English: The Interns) was released; its rights were sold to cinema. Then in 2017 and 2018, À Duration Determiné (English: For a Fixed-Term) and Indeterminés (English: Undetermined) were released by the publishing house JC Lattés.[1].

Samantha Bailly attempts to decipher, through fiction, the mechanisms of “Generation Y”, which are the people who are born approximately between the early 1980s and the late 1990s[1].

She wrote the script for the manga series Alchimia, which was published by Pika Edition[4], in addition to various scenarios for video games.

In Autumn 2018, she announced her decision to become a “hybrid author”; she experimented with self-publication and independent digital marketing for her work, La Marelle (English: Hopscotch), without leaving traditional publishing for her works already in circuit[5]. She explained her approach when interviewed by the press, “I have observed that, like all authors, income is decreasing. And that digital publishing allows for a beneficial additional income[6].” However, even before the book was published, this initiative brought upon a barrage of criticism from French publishers and booksellers on social media, with one forum comparing it to a “witch hunt” due to the apparent sexist element[7].

She eventually won her case with other self-published authors. From 15th September 2020, these authors benefit from social security in the same way their colleagues who work with publishers do[8].

In 2021, she co-founded Parenthèse, a location which combines sustainable tourism and creativity in the Orléans forest[9]. Taking over an old, abandoned campsite, she and her husband replanted 2000 trees, a permaculture garden, and a forest garden[10]. Parenthèse offers creative retreats and residencies. The tiny houses are customised by artists and writers such Mona Chollet, Mathou, Pénélope Bagieu and Marie Spénale.

At the same time, she joined the video game studio [2.21] as a narrative designer. She is working on the reboot of the 90s’ cult game Little Big Adventure, alongside Frédérick Raynal[11].

YouTube[edit]

In 2016, Samantha Bailly launched a YouTube channel[12] which addresses very targeted themes around writing, such as: how to structure your story, how sending your manuscript to publishers works, and even what it’s like to make a living from writing in France[13]. Going against the grain of the French publishing world, she defends the profession of a literary agent, the intermediary between the author and their publishers[14],[15].

In March 2019, she begins a series of vlogs with Anne-Fleur Multon[16], during which they present the writing sessions of their novel, C'est pas ma faute (English: It’s not my fault), which was published on 12th March 2020.

Text in picture: No Authors, No Books Funeral wreath during the Book of Tomorrow funeral, a satirical event of the #PayeTonAuteur movement, in July 2018 at the Jardin du Palais-Royal[17].

On 24 th May 2017, she was elected to be the president of La Charte des auteurs et des illustrateurs jeunesse (English: The Charter of Children's Authors and Illustrators)[18]. Being very committed to the defence of author’s rights, she led the #PayeTonAuteur (English: #PayYourAuthor) and #AuteursEnColère (English: #AngryAuthors) movements on social media from March 2018[19],[20].

On 6 th September 2018, at the Maison de Balzac (English: Balzac’s House) she participated in the founding of La Ligue des auteurs professionnels (English: The professional authors’ association), working together with the Charter and les États généraux de la Bande dessinée (English: The Estates General of Comics)[21]. It was an unprecedented gathering of all the people who are paid in royalties (professionals in fiction and non-fiction writing, illustration and translation) without the distinction of literary genres, notoriety and income. The association believes that “it is an urgent matter to make the changes that will save a profession in great danger[22]”. Samantha became the president, assisted by Marie-Aude Murail as the vice-president author, Denis Bajram as the vice-president illustrator, with the support of Tatiana de Rosnay and Joann Sfar , who were respectively the honorary presidents.[23]. The French Screenwriters Guild welcomed the creation of the association in a press release the same day[24].

In 2020, she was heavily involved as the professional authors’ association’s president for the implementation of the Racine repost, which advocates for the creation of a genuine professional status for artist-authors[25],[26],[27].

In March 2021, the Minister of Culture, Roselyne Bachelot, ruled out the political choice of creating a professional status[28]. Following this, Samantha Bailly expressed herself in a long column in favour of artist-authors, a column in which she explained resigning from all of her positions (notably from the professional authors’ association and the board of directors of the CNL) in reaction to the inadequacy of the government’s actions[29].

Her voluntary commitment to her profession’s social rights continues through the association, Ce qui nous lie (English: What binds us), with the aim to build innovative creative residencies.
