Jasnières is a white AOC (Appellation d'origine contrôlée or quality-controlled designation of origin) wine from the Loire Valley region of France.
Profile[edit]
The Jasnières AOC (quality-controlled designation of origin) appellation area is situated in the Sarthe departement of the Loire Valley, and covers 65 hectares of calcareous-clay hillsides, all facing south or south-east. The volumes of wine sold on the open market are therefore modest (2,300 hectolitres), which explains why this appellation is relatively unknown.
Jasnières wines are dry white wines produced from Chenin Blanc grapes. Served at a temperature of 8-10°C, they make a perfect accompaniment to well matured goat's cheeses and rillettes du Mans (a pâté made with shredded pork), another of Sarthe's gastronomical delights.
After two to four years spent in a wine cellar these wines have fully developed their character and innate qualities. The greatest vintage Jasnières can develop into increasingly sumptuous wines, and be kept for a very long time (several decades).
Jasnières wines are sold in the local area and in neighbouring departments. They are also exported to enlightened wine-lovers, particularly those in the United Kingdom.
