The White family is a historically significant American political family of Scottish and English origin, whose prominent members are known for their accomplishments in politics, in business, and in the military, especially in the U.S. states of Virginia and West Virginia.
Origin[edit]
The White family is of both Scottish and English origins, descending from Covenanters, a Scottish Presbyterian movement during the 17th century.[1] The White family became followers of Presbyterianism during the Scottish Reformation led by John Knox in the 16th century.[1] From its Scottish ancestral branch, the White family is related to Patrick Hamilton, an early Protestant Reformer in Scotland, and to Captain Robert White, who participated in the 1689 Jacobite Siege of Derry during the Williamite War in Ireland.[1] From its English ancestral branch, the White family is related to Major Henry Baker, who also aided in the defense of Derry against Williamite forces.[1] The family's ancestral home was near Edinburgh, Scotland.[1]
The progenitor of the White family in the United States was Robert White, who was the first of the Whites to reside in the English Colonies.[1][2][3] Robert White was a surgeon with the rank of captain in the Royal Navy.[1][2][3] While visiting with his relative William Hoge (an ancestor of United States House of Representatives member John Blair Hoge) in Delaware Colony, White married Hoge's eldest daughter, Margaret Hoge,[1][2][3] and relocated near York, Pennsylvania and erected a residence named "White Hall" after his ancestral home in Scotland.[1] From York, White relocated near North Mountain near Winchester in Orange County, Virginia (later Frederick County following its creation from Orange in 1742)[1][2][3] and again named his home "White Hall", from which the unincorporated community White Hill takes its name.[4]
The White family's sphere of influence became centered in Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1815 when John Baker White took up residence at Liberty Hall in Romney.[1]
