Agreed. :) Right now I'm pretty upset over the state of actor articles. I tried to expand most of them but I often feel even the least do not do justice to them. I copyedited a bit the [[Jaya Bachchan article, but it's never mentioned what her position as an actor was. She was actually credited for being one of the actresses who pioneered natural acting in mainstream Hindi cinema (she was considered to be a better actor than her husband!) which was otherwise known as an industry of melodrama and songs. None of it is really mentioned in the article, and I don't know how to do it. Thank God for a Britannica, which proves it all. But it's just one article and there are many more. Sorry, but if anybody does the heavy lifting on wikipedia its me.. As long as at some point articles are expanded then my job is worthwhile. We are a collaborative project and if any Elvis fans search for the article they may expand it, that's the idea. Why should I be expected to write every entire article on wikipedia? It happens that when you start content which is missing enmasse I am unlikely to want to write full articles on 500 articles and am unlikely actually to want to create more than 5. If you think long term then what I do is ideal for a better coverage encyclopedia. There is no time limit and wikipedia is an on going project not a complete encyclopedia. Most songs by the King in my view meet notability requirements in their own right as they do with the Beatles. You misunderstand. Of course I'd love to write every article and start them as I have done now with this song article. And I often do so with content and slowly. But when there is a mass of content missing on any given topic I simply do not have the time to write them all. If I believe it is worth having articles on them in the long term I start them. Having the search in google books each time and make a full ref everytime completely affects the efficiency of the job that's why I often don't. If I have to research every one fully initially then chances are I'm unlikely going to want to start more than 5 out of 500. If you think long term it is better for wikipedia in my view to have them all in place so editors aside from myself can join in and build them up. Unlike most editors on here I don't think literally, I contemplate that we are a wiki and quick expansion can take place like this. I see any new stub in its finished potential. But if you'd like my to expand something I've created just ask me nicely and I almost always do so, providing it is not tens or hundreds thrown at me at once. Remember though that I generally only start content which could be expanded with reliable sources so any nano stub of mine you come across chances are there are sources ready to build it up if you simply google it.. I apologise for what I said, but it does frustrate me sometimes that a lot of your AFD nominations or requested deletions could be expanded, sometimes considerably and to me at times it seems you don't check as if you did spot sources I think you could ask the article creator to expand it asap. I would only take an article to AFD if hits in google books and web are very minimal and it genuinely appears unencyclopedic. I agree with you about the collecting dust thing, I call it the stale article scenario which is possibly one of the biggest problems on wikipedia. I know every minute of our time on here should be spent on developing the already stale articles and that making them not suck is what wikipedia should be more about. But if I browse other wikipedia for instance I always see huge amounts of missing valuable content and I think first thing is to try to make the initial step towards getting them into English. My thinking behind the Elvis stubs was that Elvis fans must be abundant and ma have plenty of books about him which could reasonably be used to expand the articles. Maybe the hit and hope approach is ill advised but sometimes I feel desperate measures are needed if I see a vast bank of missing content. Sometimes though I see wikipedia for what it is right this moment and even I sometimes think it would be best to move every article below a GA into the workspace and only publish articles once they are properly written and reviewed. But my overal goal is for an encyclopedia full of GAs on any subject imaginable. This is why I spend a lot of time with GA writing and reviewing as that's my true goal. But the content missing is vast and we can't ignore it. It comes down to time and I try to balance quality and quantity edits as I literally can't do everything at once. But you'd find if you ask me nicely to expand anything I'll do so, I don't have to be hammered like some people on here! The biggest problem I'd say is that we are not attracting the very editors we need to build up our content and stop them building dust. I have been noticing your amazing contributions to WP on such an immense range of arcane subjects - you have been producing so many great and needed articles, I have been filled with awe and admiration! I myself have only been doing minimal WP work since I returned from my trip - mostly because I am working as hard as I can to revise and update my book, Through the Jade Gate to Rome, which is due to be republished in Singapore and I have set myself a deadline to get it all off to them by the end of this month if possible. Then they want to publish my next two books as well - so I have a lot on my plate. Also, I am really finding it hard to do more than a few hours a day - the old back is gradually getting worse and I am bedridden much of the time. At least it is not a fatal condition! Interlanguage Wiki

I'm not really looking to translate. I was looking to find those article that are NOT linked to the English wiki, because in many cases for WP:Turtles an article exist but no interwiki connection is made, I found that out by manually working through categories nl:Categorie:Schildpad and pl:Kategoria:Żółwie but it is tedious and time consuing to check each article in the categories. I know... 10 years... it's still a raw feeling. I was getting ready for work, Today Show on, when they showed the first building on fire and were trying to figure out what happened. When the plane hit the 2nd building, we knew something really bad was happening. I scurried in to work at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, knowing that the base was going on alert. I have been through the original version very carefully, correcting a few typos (though there is still one "its" that I think should be an "it's") and although I can see drafting points that might be a bar to FA, the prose seems to me definitely adequate for GA. Responding to Legolas's points above, I admit that I found the existing article very long for just one song, and would applaud splitting it up. It weighs in at a total of 117KB – and even discounting the lead and the notes it is miles above the MoS (Wikipedia:Article size) recommended limit for splitting (60KB plus). Imported articles script problems

Please change the script you use to import articles (in stub form) from other Wikipedias, so that a disambiguated pagename isn't repeated with the disambiguation in the lead and the infobox (and the defaultsort if applicable). An example is Dammbach (Elsava), but there are many others. Also, if possible, try to check that the disambiguation follows our MOS and normal English naming conventions and names. E.g. Möhlin (Rhein) should probably be Möhlin (Rhine). Finally, isn't it more customary to say "The X is a river" than "X is a river"? All these articles seem to start with the latter, while most manually created river articles start with the former... Fram (talk) 11:36, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Virtually all of the entries do follow our MOS, I'm not sure what you are referring to. Dammbach (Elsava) is like so because it is related to the Elsava. I'm not sure this is of essential importance, it is quite common to have the parent river in brackets if there are multiple names. All I know is that I ransack the categories on German wiki and start them and so the link match with minimal extra trouble. Sorry about the Rhein, I think I actually caught most of them and moved to Rhine though, like I did with (Fluss) and Nordschwartzwald. You'll find that many of the entires could be moved to plain names without dab. The reason being though, they are obivously dabbed on German wiki with other potential articles under that name. The disambiguation, apart from the occasional problem, is not the main issue, I think that the easier fix in your script would be the removal of the disambiguation part of the article name in the body of the article, and of course starting the descriptions with "The" instead of immediately with the article name. Festival Internacional Cervantino

Hi! Students of the Club Wikipedia at ITESM CCM and I are working on a project to create and improve articles related to the Festival Internacional Cervantino. We are still organizing although we have made some good contacts with embassy of the special guest-countries and the press people of the Festival. Ive worked on the Festival's page and two participants' pages Angereds Teater and Åke Parmerud as well as the European Festival Association to which the festival belongs. It hasnt been easy so far, even the Festival page is no where near where Id like it to be and a lot of that is finding info. That's where we hope working with the embassies and making other contacts will help. *Fingers crossed* These articles also desperately need images, another focus of the project. Anyway, we could sure use some experienced hands at this, as most Club members are still newbies at editing Wikipedia. We want the Festival's article in as many languages as possible, as as many of the participants' pages in both English and Spanish.

If you look at the article there are a lot of red links, especially in the two boxes at the bottom. More urgent is the box with the performers for 2011. It does now, because someone else decided that the easiest way to clear it would be to do remove a reference from the time zone template. That template, of course, is called by the Russian district infobox, which is used in every single district stub you recently created. Most of those stubs have their ref section commented out, too, which means that the time zone ref has nowhere to go, which throws an error and populates the maintenance category. Another user uncommented the ref section in about 500 of those stubs, and there were about 300 more remaining by the time the ref got shot.

I'm planning to revert this edit tomorrow, after which the maintenance cat will re-populate again, at which time I'll be there to clean it up properly (and that's where your help comes in). Of course, if you don't have time for this tomorrow, we can do it any other day, but it needs to be done eventually. Article creations -- Rivers

Hi Dr., I've been patrolling the new pages log lately, and I've seen that you've created heaps of articles, which is good. However, sorry for my ignorance, but is there a way around creating a load of river articles? I mean, some of the rivers themselves might not be notable, so perhaps they could be merged using the geography of the rivers ie "List of rivers in X". Check the articles on German wikipedia, average article looks like this. Pick any I started at random and click "corresponding article" in the translation tag. I am yet to see a river which didn't look notable and wouldn't have enough info for a full resourceful article. Trust me on this. Of course I am being overly optimistic about getting people to traslate them all but the fact remains that wikipedia is an ongoing encyclopedia development and that a truly comprehensive English wikipedia would have coverage of all of them so the initial bridge of importing them with a translation link is the first step. I wouldn't start a single article which couldn't be expanded considerably with reliable sources, you have my word on that. I reckon I have a 99.5% success rate with the new articles I create that they can be reasonably expanded into something substantial. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:32, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

OK Doc, I trust you on that. FWIW, I prefer if we start with a centralised article and expand on it, and as the article expand, we spin off daughter articles. That way we can get people to work at one particular article, rather than ten. If we were seriously concentrating on quality not quantity (which is something I at times would rather believe it or not) then we would nuke every article which is a stub or poorly written/move it into the wikipedia space and only permit articles which have reached GA quality into the mainspace. If that was actually put into practice I'd happily work that way and build us brick by brick with every single article of good quality. As a reader that would be ideal. Its all or nothing with me. And I think long term as to how wikipedia can have the widest coverage of topics possible and how we should be trying to break the systematic bias between anglo countries and the developing world. If we can have an article on all 300 episodes of some US TV series then we can at least have a few hundred articles on notable German and Italian TV series themselves for instance. The idea of course is that they are all added to like Coad's Green was within hours of creation yesterday and over time built into something substantial. The idea of course is that readers looking for the subject are disappointed with the fruit of the article and add to it and become wikipedia editors themselves.. I think one of the best things we can do for the goals of increasing knowledge in the long term is to route out articles on other wikipedias which have decent length (sourced if possible) and try to have an ENglish language equivalent. As if you browese through any of the categories, particularly German and Polish wikipedia it will astound you how many decent articles they have currently not even mentioned on en wiki. So whatever stub I start I visualize the foreign version fully written into english and see beyond its initial meager state. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:54, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Stubs

I hate to frustrate you in your attempt to have the record for new article creations. But when it comes to British places, there is a strong feeling that a red link is better than an empty stub such as "Timbersbrook is a village in Cheshire, England". I would suggest that you slow down and create a decent stub for each location, but that is probably not in your nature. However I challenge you: as a minimum, please provide population and co-ordinates for each place, either using {{coord}} or {{gbmapping}}. Also, please drop the pointless link to Google maps - provide an external link to something that actually mentions the place! Yes, but are you going to add them? Another consideration is to avoid articles about very small settlements. A view which I believe more than one British editor shares is that settlement articles should be about civil parishes and that names of smaller settlements should redirect to the civil parish article. Absolutely no virtue in creating Coad's Green? You are completely missing the whole point of a collaborative wikipedia with wiki technology which means articles can dramatically change within minutes. You are also unaware that I've expanded scores of stale articles on Higland villages like Aberchalder which were neglected for years and put some life back into them by reorganizing Category:Populated places in Highland. You are wrong about my intentions and capabilities. The way I see it is that as a collaborative project we all have the same goals eventually and that an existing stub can be be expanded by anybody visiting it. I see far beyond the initial meager stub. The way I see it is that we should be working towards having a decent article on every British settlement asap. Sorry, but having done a fair bit of local research in my time I'd say that virtually any hamlet in the UK could have something substantial said about them,. I'd have to agree with you though that with the UK where information can be accessed for many places it would be better to start them with more information. It is just a matter of time. A few years back we did not have all municipalities on deWiki - now everyone of them has its own category due to all the hamlets and other items. Still work in progress though but those articles are already seaping through to here. I would imagine that the articles about localities in the UK should be ahead of those about non-English places due to systematic bias. The British villages is one of my biggest interests on here and I enjoy writing half decent articles about small villages and hamlets. If I had time to write every article to Ambrosden quality]] I would do so. I know not everybody sees it my way but I work far better if I know a vast bunch of articles on any topic aren't red linked. Like with British villages if I know that a county has an article on every settlement then you can completely dedicate the time to expanding what already exists about them and not worry about starting articles. However sub stubby the creation, our eventual goals are the same, to produce an Ambrosden type quality article at least for every settlement in the UK. I was going to wade in here and ask the same thing as RHaworth; I had noticed that a lot of redlinks had disappeared from List of places in Cornwall and that you had created a load of stubs that didn't contain a lot of information. My preference has always been to create expanded location stubs, e.g. with geocoordinates, listing the civil parish etc - but after reading this thread and the examples cited I can see the benefit of creating them - so thanks. Although, could I just ask you to ensure that the information contained in the article is correct - basically is the location, described as a "village", actually a village and does the referenced Google Maps actually show said location? One example is Cusveorth Coombe, which you would be hard pushed to describe as a hamlet (where you can use Category:Hamlets in Cornwall, rather than the village one) and does not show up on Google Maps. List of country houses in the United Kingdom

Hi. I've been away in Crete and have only just caught up with everything here. I mentioned two lists - one was an alphabetical list of everything in the (then) current WP list, in spreadsheet form. It's probably no longer completely accurate but I'll be happy to let you have it by email. The reason I created it was to check it off against the alphabetical list in Girouard's The Victoran Country House. I got as far as Ascot Heath House by Robert Kerr (architect) (apparently now offices for the racecourse), and then other things started looming larger (story of my life!). Secondly, I regret to inform you that I cannot devote any significant time to this or any Wiki project anymore. I am currently a Peace Corps volunteer serving as an English teacher in the Kyrgyz Republic (which, funny enough, borders China). Whether I visit an internet cafe or use my laptop, I only get access to the internet when I take a 25 minute taxi ride into the capital of my province. Hmm. I'm not exactly at liberty to say that, or indulge too much information online regarding my whereabouts. Let's just say that I'm living and teaching English somewhere in Talas Province and leave it at that. Sorry. The Peace Corps is rather paranoid in their concerns for their volunteers' personal safety (which has some reason behind it considering some nasty things that have happened to volunteers in the past). I've taken a few pictures of the mountains here in Talas and in Chui Province, which are breathtaking. I've also seen the waterfall at Ala Archa Park after an arduous climb up into the mountains. I'll share a few photos later on, but right now I've got to run! I have no time to do any lengthy downloads of personal photos to Wiki Commons right now. Great link. However, I placed the ruins on the north bank and NOT the south bank of the Chama River. Almost as interesting was the next ruin in the article, Sapawe, located near El Rito, New Mexico We went to El Rito after leaving Posh...... to hit a little restaurant there, but it was closed. Barf Anbar

The coords at GNS (used) match closely with those at the fa wiki and what the atlas shows, and are quite close to the county capital. What seems wrong with them? Carlossuarez46 (talk) 21:36, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

GNS has Sangbaran at 325910N 501119E (close by) and Khameslu at 330011N 501137E. Whether this are artefacts and have merged into Barf Anbar or not, I have no source. They are all close by each other, but not impossibly so for such small population figures. But leaning to merger, there is no listing in the 2006 census for either Sangbaran or Khameslu in the Barf Anbar Rural District, implying their no longer continued separate existence at the point in time, but again they may also have been abandoned with similar absence of evidence. In any event, I'm pretty sure that Barf Anbar is where it is reported to be - as to how it came to be, alas, I put the evidence before you. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 21:51, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Help requested on geographical article Saloum Delta National Park and the delta itself

Hi Dr. B. You're good at this stuff - the Saloum Delta as a whole is now a UNESCO World Heritage site [1]. But the heritage site seems to be for the delta as a whole, not the national park in particular and there seem to be some natural reserves in the delta too. It seems complicated. All we have at the moment is this one national park article. Could you help with disentangling those, and maybe... since we don't have an article on the delta or on the Sine River? Funny that you should mention

Sapawe, New Mexico because I just (this morning) called the archaeologist at Carson National Forest in El Rito to ask about getting in to Sapawe and was told that it is very difficult to do. It is not owned by the Forest Service, but by the New Mexico Sacred Land Trust Organization (or something) and they do tours maybe one a year. if I am lucky. However he did direct me to a much smaller site in Carson that I will try and visit in the near future. Meanwhile I did begin a miserable stub for El Rito, which is forward motion of some sort. Oh yes, what do you know about copyrights and google satellite images/ I am finding all these ruins but am dubious about posting any of them Carptrash (talk) 21:43, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Mystery solved, I think. The Thanlyin River is alt name for the Salween River. Google the 3 words, Thanlyin Salween River, and there are a few hits to corroborate that. Article of the Month idea

Howdy Dr. Blofeld. Matthew Roth mentioned your idea for an Article of the Month contest to me. This sounds like a great idea to pitch to the Wikimedia chapters, but I strongly doubt the Foundation would have an interest in it (for a variety of reasons). Just wanted to encourage you not to give up on the idea even if the WMF doesn't go for it. I think it would be great for one of the chapters to do something like this (perhaps focused on articles related to a particular region). Plus the chapters have a lot of money right now (mostly sitting in the bank), so the prizes wouldn't be difficult to procure. You should try pitching it to them, and see if any of them bite. Cheers! Hi! Yeah its actually getting the right people to show an interest. I'd propose an Article of the Month and a Core Contest Prize monthly for the most improved core article of top importance. Well I've at least tried to get them to discuss it. I know Jimbo showed some interest in introducing the scheme and introducing competitions but the moment I mention "reward" and Amazon vouchers he went strangely silent.. I doubt he has actually mentioned anything about what I said, so hopefully this time something might twig. The potential would be vast if it was well known on the Internet you had the chance to win $500 or something to write a good wikipedia article! My idea was something like Amazon vouchers which could be used to buy further books to write missing encyclopedia articles.improving existing ones, osomething like 1st Prize $500, 2nd -$250, 3rd -$100 4th -$50, 5th-$25... The chance of winning something would certainly get me to produce more good content, I'm sure I can vouch for many others and people currently not editing wikipedia but could be.. That's roughly $12,000 a year, say double that for a Core Contest monthly and I think we could raise $25,000 a year for promoting content... Anyway.. Good catch. He'd be part of the Guatemalan cabinet, not Mexican, but I can't find a government source to verify.
