Wyangala[edit]

Wyangala Dam wall spillway, with village in the background

  • ... that the 85 m (279 ft) high dam wall (pictured) at Wyangala is 1.37 km (0.85 mi) long and 304 m (997 ft) wide at its base?

  • Article has just been promoted to GA status. Hook length is fine. Image seems to be fine. The width of the dam is confirmed in citation 72, but this and citation 71 disagree about the dam's height (85 m in one and 82.3 m in the other). I cannot find a citation for the length of the dam being 1.5 km; the two sources give the "crest length" as 1,370 m and 1,372 m. Suggest add where Wyangala is to the hook. Also wouldn't this be more appropriate as a hook for the separate article on the dam itself.--DavidCane (talk) 04:25, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the feedback. The wall length was taken from the Wyangala Dam wikipedia article - however, I suspect that is incorrect now, and will make adjustments to the number in both the Wyangala and Wyangala Dam articles. Crest length should be 1,370 metres. Height of wall is 85m, the 82.3m article is less reliable than the State Water article and may simply be a typo. The village and the dam are inexorably linked - I see no issue having the DYK associated with the Wyangala article, as it offers a more complete history of the dam and all things associated with it. Wyangala Dam article needs a lot of work and is only start class for now. DirtDigger (talk) 06:59, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Also, how to include where Wyangala is to the hook? The village is literally at the foot of the dam wall. How about:
  • ALT1 ... that the 85 m (279 ft) high dam wall (pictured) adjacent Wyangala is 1.37 km (0.85 mi) long and 304 m (997 ft) wide at its base? DirtDigger (talk) 07:27, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
  • OK. My comment about stating where Wyangala is was with regard to it being in Australia as this seems to be a common requirement for DYK hooks.--DavidCane (talk) 14:07, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Sorry, but I am overdazzled by that long string of numbers in the hook. Perhaps we could come up with something more hooky? Yoninah (talk) 21:45, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
  • how about:
  • ALT2 ... that the village of Wyangala in New South Wales, Australia, is located just below a 1.37 km (0.85 mi) long dam wall, which holds 1,220,000 ML (43,000×10^6 cu ft) of water? DirtDigger (talk) 22:41, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Is the length of the dam so important? Yoninah (talk) 22:45, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
  • I guess not - though it is a long dam, and I thought it would be of interest - what do you suggest? DirtDigger (talk) 23:10, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
  • How about:
ALT3 that the day after St Vincent's Church, Wyangala was opened, a storm knocked down the rear wall as preparations were being made for the first mass?
EEng (talk) 01:39, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
  • maybe this:
ALT4 ... that the Australian village of Wyangala was established in 1928 to house construction workers of Wyangala Dam (pictured)?
DirtDigger (talk) 08:12, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
  • or this:
ALT5 ... that the original pioneering settlement of Wyangala, Australia, was submerged under water following the completion of Wyangala Dam (pictured) in 1935?
DirtDigger (talk) 08:28, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Thank you, ALT5 looks very good. The hook ref is verified and cited inline. However, now that I'm looking over the article, there are paragraphs that don't have any citations, such as:
  • 3rd paragraph under "Bushrangers"
  • List of postmasters/postmistresses under "Wyangala Dam Post Office"
  • Both paragraphs under "Sports clubs"
  • Last 5 paragraphs under "Demographics"
  • List of species under "Flora and Fauna"
  • Second paragraph under "Climate"
  • Per DYK Rule D2, there should be at least one citation per paragraph. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 20:44, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
  • I've added the references. Also for ALT5, the image needs to be the original dam wall, not the upgraded one - so image changes to this:
Original Wyangala Dam wall, completed in 1935
DirtDigger (talk) 21:49, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Thank you. Everything is in order now. New image is pd. ALT5 good to go. Yoninah (talk) 22:17, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
  • I am concerned that some of the phrasing in this article is too close to that of its sources. Compare for example "noticed a faint sparkle at the foot of a tree near his base camp. He stopped and picked up the first quartz specimen containing gold." with " noticed, at the foot of a tree, a faint sparkle; he stopped and picked up the first quartz specimen containing gold". I have also removed a number of citations to Wikipedia, as these are not permitted. Nikkimaria (talk) 16:17, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Thanks for taking the time to remove the wikipedia citations. I'll go through and check for any parts with close wording and fix them. Is there anything else? DirtDigger (talk) 20:45, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
  • I think I've snagged a few of the close phrasing issues, but will go through the article later when I have more time to ensure all is right. If you spot anything, could you please tell me or fix yourself? Much appreciated. DirtDigger (talk) 21:29, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
  • I've gone through the entire article, all should be well now. Thanks for the feedback. DirtDigger (talk) 00:46, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Hi DirtDigger, it looks like there are still issues here: compare for example "granitic rock outcrops on moderate to high relief bouldered hillsides" with "granitic rocks of moderate to high relief bouldered hillsides", and other material from that source. Nikkimaria (talk) 04:06, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Once again, thanks for the feedback and help - I've reworked the text for this reference... is there anything else I've missed? Cheers DirtDigger (talk) 22:02, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Okay, not seeing any further problems on spotchecking. Nikkimaria (talk) 00:40, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Cheers, so we're good to go with ALT 5 again? DirtDigger (talk) 00:58, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
