Confusing, Hook is awkward, I'd changed it to:
- ALT1: ... that Balu Mahendra made Neengal Kettavai, a mainstream film, to prove to critics that he could make commercial films?
The text in the article is also misleading, "Mahendra later claimed that he made the film to prove critics that he could not make commercial films" do you mean "Mahendra later claimed that he made the film to prove critics that he could make commercial films?
