Comment: Article appeared on the recent deaths section of ITN. Per precedent, as a non-bold link this does not disqualify it from appearing on DYK.

@ ThaddeusB. Re GA improvement. The usual advice is to save time and hassle by getting the article copyedited before entering it for GA. I've mentioned a few minor improvements for GA in the review below. You may also be able to find free images of the old and new types of bat here. These would be relevant for the article because the change of bat affected his career. The rest of our free table tennis images are here, including File:Johnny Leach.png.
New enough (expanded 11 June, nom 18 June) and long enough. QPQ done. Hook is acceptable and short enough. The quote in the hook checks out online with citation #3. Re the three championships in the hook: if this refers to 1949 Stockholm, 1951 Czechoslovakia and 1953 Swaythling Cup, then it all checks out with citation #3 also (but see issue 4). Text is objective and neutral, and is fully referenced. I checked most of the internal links and all the external links, and found no WP disambigs and no external access problems. As from today we no longer have use of the dup detector, but my spot checks found no copyvio or close paraphrasing. Issues, including GA issues at nominator's request: (1) ~~Typos - "to put drastic spin the ball", "He was again was eliminated in the round of 16" "at the international level", "past the round of 16", "Leach was known was his humility".~~ (2) "As of 2014, it remains the only team title in British history" is ambiguous. I think you mean that (1953?) was the one and only year when a Brit team won that title (not that Britain only has one team comp). (3) ~~Please check that there are dates in each para of the playing career section (not just dates hidden in links) - I got lost in the two paras covering the mid-1950s.~~ (4) ~~Please confirm that all of the hook checks out with citation #3 in the way I detailed above - if not, please explain how it checks out.~~ (5) This one is for GA only - it would do no harm to change all the indirect internal links to direct links. I understand this is not a WP requirement and does not affect DYK, but GA reviewers have been known to ask you to make this correction. Thanks for the thorough review. I have made all the copyedits and such, except for "at the international level" and "past the round of 16", which are both ordinary English for me, so I am not sure what was desired to change. You are correct that the hook is backed by citation 3 as described. Thank you, ThaddeusB. Re issue 1, I have completed the copyediting for you. Remaining issue: Re issue 2 above, to prevent ambiguity please change "As of 2014, it remains the only team World Championship title in British history" to something like: "As of 2014, 1953 remains the only year in which a British team won that title." I have struck issues 3 and 5 because they are not necessary for DYK. When the above remaining issue has been resolved, this nom should be OK. --Storye book (talk) 19:30, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

"Round of 16" means the round where 16 people are left in Am. English. Maybe this phrase doesn't work in Brit. Eng, but "roudn 16" would more naturally mean the 16th round, I'd think. (Or maybe it does work: BBC uses it [1], as does Telegraph [2].) How would you say the round where 16 people play each other to reach 8? I also don't understand how "it" could be ambiguous in context, but have completely reworked the sentence in question. --ThaddeusB (talk) 02:09, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

In the past, an item has been allowed to appear on RD and DYK. An RD posting is a single word, not a blurb. See this discussion. And these precedents: 1, 2, also mentioned here. I believe there are otehrs, but since I wasn't involved with those its hard for me to find them. --ThaddeusB (talk)

I'm going to say it is good to go again as there is precedent and the rules are unclear; if it gets pulled again and sparks some discussion that's no problem (I assume nobody is going to discuss it at the old section on the DYK talk page as we are all flighty and have moved on to the next drama, but I'll leave a note there anyway.)
