A fact from Zanardinia appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 3 February 2020 (check views). The text of the entry was as follows:
Did you know... that growth in the brown seaweed Zanardinia typus occurs at the base of the hairs that grow around the edge of the frond?
@Cwmhiraeth: This article says: "The only species, Zanardinia typus ..." However we have two pages from 19th century French textbooks that refer to "Zanardinia collaris" with illustrations.
Can you help clear up the discrepancy? Did the classification of Z. Collaris change to something else in the last century or two? Probably worth a comment in the article. --GRuban (talk) 15:30, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@GRuban: According to WoRMS, the genus is monotypic with Zanardinia typus being the only species. Zanardinia collaris is an unaccepted name, that species being considered to be a synonym of Gymnosorus collaris, for which we do not have an article. Sorry, I am afraid I am not a biologist, so only understood part of that! Is Z.collaris a former name for Z.typus that is no longer used? So can we use one of those pictures in this article? Or is it a name for a different species, not actually a Zanardinia at all? In either case, is there any possibility to add a referenced sentence to that effect to the article, for the benefit of the great unwashed, like myself? (Something like: "In the 1880s, an unrelated species was named Zanardinia collaris, but is now called Gymnosorus collaris and not considered to be a Zanardinia.[ref]" ?) --GRuban (talk) 19:38, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's a different species, not actually a Zanardinia at all. I could add a sentence to that affect, but I think the scientific name is in a state of flux as, if you click on the link given above, and then click on the genus name "Gymnosorus" at the WoRMS site, it states that that name is unaccepted too.
