Photo[edit]

I just added a photo of Nambu getting the Franklin Medal in 2005 (standing next to Frank Wilczek) to the Commons: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:WilczekNambu.jpg betsythedevine (talk) 10:48, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I cropped my 2005 photo and also posted the cropped version to Wikimedia Commons. I was proud and happy to see it on the front page of Wikipedia yesterday! But I am not very happy that Reuters seems to have taken that photo from Wikipedia and their clients are happily using it without crediting Wikipedia or Betsy Devine. The photo has a CC Attribution-Share Alike license. I just blogged about this (http://betsydevine.com/blog/2008/10/08/thumbs-up-for-nambu-big-thumbs-down-to-reuters/) but I also want to mention here that our Wikipedia photo being credited to Reuters is one I took, in 2005, with my own camera, a photo that has my own husband in it. I did not send the photo to Reuters, and I can only assume that they took it from Wikipedia. betsythedevine (talk) 14:04, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Vacuum Structure[edit]

The thing that bothers me about the Nobel citation is that this part of Nambu's work is about spontaneous symmetry breaking, about vacuum structure. He and Jona-Lasinio showed that the vacuum has nontrivial condensates, like a superconducter. This is extremely fundamental, not only because it is a Goldstone phenomenon, but because it is an experimentally verified way in which there are nontrivial fields in the vacuum. Just to show how revolutionary this idea was, as late as 1970, many luminaries like Martinus Veltman objected to a nontrivial vacuum. Veltman thought that the cosmological constant was too small for this type of thing.

Unlike Nambu, the CKM matrix is explicit symmetry breaking, by terms in the Lagrangian. It has no relation to vacuum structure whatsoever. To lump the two together (and to slight Cabibbo, but that's another story) is a shame. It confuses the discovery of the pion-condensate (a fundamental insight about the vacuum) with Cabibbo's discovery of nondiagonal quark weak interactions, which is not a vacuum phenomenon.

But we don't have to repeat the mistakes of the Nobel commitee. It is possible to acknowledge the fundamental reassessment of the vacuum here, and to completely separate it from quark mixing. I don't know what the proper wording should be, but I think it should acknowlege that quarks pair-up and condense, like electrons in a superconducter, into a Lorentz invariant Pion condensate that spontaneously breaks chiral symmetry. National Medal of Science[edit]

Did Nambu receive that prize? His name is not on that prize's page. Mdob (talk) 20:24, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

He's listed at the List of National Medal of Science laureates article, and he can also be found using the query form at: [1]Myasuda (talk) 01:00, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
