The first Yates Wine Lodge[edit]

The article currently states that it was in both Oldham and Preston; the Preston address (54 Carnarvon Street) seems incorrect but there was a Wine Lodge at one end of Carnarvon Street in Manchester. Google search suggests the Angel pub on High Street, Oldham - is this the High Street in Lees? Peter James (talk) 20:30, 8 August 2012 (UTC) It's (I think) fairly common knowledge that the first Yatesy's Wine Lodge was in Oldham. The Angel pub you talk of was at the site of the first Yates ever, in Oldham on High St. I posted a pic this evening that is purported to be THE original Yates in Oldham. The Wiki refers to Yates changing it's name in 2001 and dropping the Wine Lodge, I see a newspaper report dated 2004 that contradicts this date of 2001. The Wiki refers to the 2 brothers founding Yates, however the article I found states they also had a sister as a founder member, making 3 founders. I'm trying to find confirmation of the "folklore of Yates Wine Lodges", re. sawdust on the floor, spittoons etc. The Wiki needs more history of what made Yates, YATES ! There is a FAR bigger story behind "The Blob" I remember. One of the founders imported the cheapest sweet wine from Australia, they had wine, we had customers, but it tasted horrendous, so the cheapest brandy was added in UK to "jazz" it up, sugar, lemon and hot water made it hit "The sweet spot", very quickly. I dislike the word "Pub" being used in the article, Yates was a "Wine Lodge", NOT a pub. How many pubs had the selection that Yates had ? How many pubs had a hot water geyser ? None Or about none is my bet. Ref http://menmedia.co.uk/oldhamadvertiser/news/s/477129_yates_call_time_on_brand_name DaPetester (talk) 08:02, 14 September 2012 (UTC).[reply]
