Article name[edit]

If the intention of this article is to describe the History of the Saint John River Valley, then I'd suggest that something like History of the Saint John River Valley per WP:NAMINGCRITERIA, WP:COMMONNAME, etc., is more fitting than Wolastoq. That said, even the River Thames and the Danube don't have history articles. --Cornellier (talk) 01:10, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Also, when I clicked Wolastoq inside the phrase "the Wolastoq Grand Chief" in the Jenica Atwin article, expecting an article about people, I got directed to this. Should WP:AFD be considered? Peter Gulutzan (talk) 17:42, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Editors of the Jenica Atwin article may have inappropriately used the river name rather than it's modified form Wolastoqiyik to describe the First Nation inhabitants similar to using Canada rather than Canadian. I hesitate to change that link because the tribe has been split by the international boundary, and residents living in Canada may disapprove of the Maliseet name used by residents of the United States. Maliseet is a Mi'kmaq term loosely translated as "bad talkers" when the Mi'kmaq regarded the Wolastoqiyik dialect as a heavily accented version of their own Algonquian dialect.
I invite attention to this discussion to understand the origin of this article. The status of this river as an international boundary artificially splits the region's previous history as a single first nation with important contributions to preservation of the Acadian way of life. I am of the opinion this material might be integrated into the Saint John River (Bay of Fundy) article from which it was removed by Cornellier. Failure to keep this information together needlessly fragments background circumstances important to understanding of that history. This situation may justify application of WP:IAR to the WP:WikiProject Rivers guidelines. Thewellman (talk) 19:58, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Then my WP:AFD suggestion was not appropriate, sorry. Current links to "Wolastoq" from Theatre New Brunswick production history and from Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa may also be problems. I'm out of my depth and will say no more. Peter Gulutzan (talk) 20:51, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to me that "Wolastoq" should redirect to Saint John River (Bay of Fundy) (which is why I set it up that way in the first place). If the history needs to be in a separate article, it should be in History of the Saint John River (Bay of Fundy) or similar. I will note in passing that Colorado River, a Featured Article, has an extensive history section in it (with History of the Colorado River redirecting there), so merging what is her back into the main river article would not appear out of place.
There should probably also be a hatnote referencing Wolastoqiyik as the name of the people for places that are mislinked here instead of there.Magic♪piano 15:45, 7 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
