Key facts[edit]

The facts come directly from the SEQ Wivenhoe Dam page listed. I propose that the recent changes be reverted. --WikiCats 04:21, 19 February 2006 (UTC) The primary purpose of the dam is for flood mitigation control not water storage! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.148.90.232 (talk) 01:29, 30 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Controversy[edit]

Should mention be made that the dam was built in a poor area of rainfall and is therefore quite ineffective leaving Brisbane with extended periods of water restrictions? --Spuzzdawg (talk) 01:52, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a reference for an area of poor rainfall? I'm looking at a BOM map of Australia showing median annual rainfall at 800 - 1200 mm for that area. Another annual rainfall map shows the variability is low to moderate and a rainfall zoning map indicating it's in a subtropical zone with mostly summer rainfall. I can only remember a single period of water restrictions in Brisbane, the current one, which is usually attributed to the severe drought we are experiencing. Other factors such as poor governance and population growth exceeding forecasts for the region might be the reasons it is an issue rather than a lack of rain. - Shiftchange (talk) 04:58, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
http://wivenhoesomersetrainfall.com/ has a fair bit of information about how the maps you are referring to are flawed. There is also a fair bit of information on Wivenhoe dam being filled by 'uncommon events' rather than normal rainfall which makes water shortage inevitable. A few studies have come to the conclusion that Australia is not in a drought but actually coming out of two centuries of above average rainfall. --Spuzzdawg (talk) 09:24, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Title of Article: "Wivenhoe Dam" vs "Lake Wivenhoe"[edit]

Just think it should be consistent with others. At the moment other articles are named "Lake Somerset" and "Lake Awoonga". Do you think its more appropriate to be called "Wivenhoe Dam" or "Lake Wivenhoe" ? I am personally in favour of "Wivenhoe Dam" and feel like "Somerset Dam" should also be changed but thought i'd guage opinion :) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ezykron (talkcontribs) 07:48, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ezykron, I am completing a project to move all man-made water reservoirs from lakes to dams. In Wikipedia, a lake should only be used in Australia where it refers to a naturally occurring body of water that is not a sea/ocean/etc (e.g. Lake Bathurst, Gippsland Lakes, etc.) The project to move all man-made lakes to dams has been completed in New South Wales and the ACT. I am progressively working through the same for Queensland and the other states. Hence, this article should be Wivenhoe Dam, and it should make reference to the impounded reservoir, Lake Wivenhoe. In need, Lake Wivenhoe should redirect to Wivenhoe Dam, but typically this is only done where the name of the the dam and the reservoir are significantly different; for example Lake Kurwongbah redirects to Sideling Creek Dam. I hope this helps you. Rangasyd (talk) 09:58, 6 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Lungfish[edit]

Self-sustaining populations of lungfish have lived in dams in SE Qld since 1896, over 100 years. An interesting & important fact not generally known.

Whose Government?[edit]

I was looking up dams and histories and noticed on the Wivenhoe page that it states investigations into a dam began in the mid 60s, government approval for construction occurred in 1971, land acquisition began in 1973, in 1976 pumped storage hydro-electric was approved, the first construction contract was awarded in 1977 and that dam was completed in 85. While there are a lot of government references, which government is responsible for the infrastructure actually isn't specified. The Bjelke-Petersen government ran from 8 August 1968 – 1 December 1987, which covers most or all of this period - it depends what counts as mid 60s. If it were say 1963 that'd be the Nicklin government and still the Country Party. Given the Joh Bjelke-Petersen page references Wivenhoe, should this not be clarified? 人族 (talk) 04:07, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
