Schwa rendering[edit]

The best rendering of the schwa-like sound in the first syllable in (US) English would probably be something like "VUNT-(h)ook". So I put it back in there. =J --Big Adamsky 21:55, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Translation[edit]

IPAzation[edit]

The prounoucation of the prouncation of Windhoek [in the article, its in Parentheses after the 1st occurrence of Windhoek] needs to be IPAized.

There is no particular problem with the pronunciation of Windhoek. Whatever the Afrikaans/Oorlam origin, most English or international speakers will simply render it as Wind-hook. Easy as that.

Cleanest city[edit]

I am disputing that claim that windhoek is the cleanest city in africa. the section may need Tertiary produced references to verify. I have tried google, nothing came up. 10:47, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Agreed. The Economist, a local publication as it turns out, and not the one in the UK (!) has a blog about tourists being threatened in broad daylight. I saw nothing supporting the comment. The other was in Boer. It may have supported what was said, but the statement needs a WP:RELY source from well outside the region. Not a separate subsection even if true. Deleted. A credible article with crime statistics, health statistics, etc. will make whatever statement needs to be made. Article is not there yet. Student7 (talk) 12:37, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology[edit]

I'm going to remove the statement again that the name Windhoek is derived from Dutch: By the time Windhoek was founded the language was known as Afrikaans, for over 100 years.
