Birthplace[edit]

Sure about Stirling? The Herbertshire Castle page implies it's in Falkirk and the Falkirk Local History Society have a nice article about it. I assumed this page was right, so I categorised the photo of Gatacre's memorial accordingly. That will need correcting too if it's in Falkirk. Sjwells53 (talk) 21:07, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Removing 'Loved by his men' and other changes[edit]

I have added further detail on Gen Gatacre's various campaigns. I have also made a few other small changes, including removing that "his men loved him". No reference is provided, and and I can not find a source. I have said that his men "recognised that his activities were generally benevolent and on the whole thought well of him" which is taken from Ziegler's referenced book and seems more accurate given Gatacre's style of leadership.

I have changed the date of the report on the Bubonic Plague of Bombay as the source states 1897, not the 1887 originally quoted in the article.

Confusion with his brother[edit]

I have removed the sentence “He commanded the 23rd Bombay Light Infantry as part of the Upper Burma Field Force during the Third Burma War and was mentioned in Sir George White's despatches of 10 March 1887” as this relates to William’s brother, John Gatacre, an officer in the Indian Army at the time. The London Gazette entry for 2 Sept 1887 refers to “Lieut Colonel Gatacre commanding the 23rd Bombay Light Infantry”. Although no christian name is given, John’s Indian Biographical Dictionary entry confirms he commanded the unit mentioned. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Helensq (talk • contribs) 16:46, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
