Inconsistencies in Article[edit]

How can Westfield London be the biggest indoor shopping centre in Europe, but only the third largest shopping centre in the UK (behind Metrocentre and Bluewater, both of which are indoor)? Bear in mind also, that there is a shopping centre in Turkey larger than Metrocentre, hence now Metrocentre only being the biggest shopping centre in the European Union. Needed a qualification - largest in-town shopping centre, as distinct from the out-of-town ones. The article now reflects this, with references to the claim.Cnbrb (talk) 10:08, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
However, thecentre:mk is also an in-town shopping centre, although estimates of its retail floorspace vary widely and are complicated by small recent extensions and conversions of storage space etc. into retail Aboodoo (talk) 22:38, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think in the interests of impartiality and encyclopedic treatment this article should also include some of the criticisms of and bad press associated with the development. Ethnic Balance on Thursday Evenings[edit]

For some reason it appears that the ethnic make up is majority black on Thursday evenings. Most of these are "wannabe-gangsta" youths with jeans so low their underwear shows, and baseball caps. There's a large council estate nearby, with a significant black population, and Harlesden (mainly black) is only 2 miles away. Perhaps the local yoof have decided to make Thursday evenings their night to hang out in Westfield. I work in the area. They're no different to any other inner-city teenagers. Some bad eggs who steal bikes and worse, but mainly aimiable. Isn't it great that there's a really nice shopping centre, with juice bars, etc, and soon a cinema, for them to meet up in, rather than playing video games on their own, or sneaking round drinking illegally in back alleys!

They wear yoof fashions. They think they look good. Some of them even have underpants which are worth showing off. Many of them like window shopping, even if they then go away and buy things cheaper over the internet. By the way, my 89 year old aunt, who died a few weeks ago, also often wore gloves when going out. She did it not to avoid leaving fingerprints, but to keep her hands clean and because she felt it looked smart. I believe Michael Jackson did it for the same reasons. Other development projects?[edit]

The 2nd para of the article states "The site is part of the White City district, where several other large scale development projects are under way or in the planning stages." I work nearby, and have not noticed any developments in progress. Nor am I aware of any submitted for Planning Consent, although there may well be some. A casual look up the road shows that the area to the north has many empty buildings, which are probably awaiting a favourable development climate, and of course Television Centre may be developed in the future, although certainly not soon.

But if anyone knows of more advanced plans, I would be very interested to read about them. To a casual user, Westfield appears to be thriving, so no doubt the area will change...but in what way? Enginear (talk) 00:09, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Prior use of site[edit]

2nd para of article states "The development is on a large brownfield site which was once the location of the 1908 Franco-British Exhibition; the initial site clearance demolished the final set of halls still remaining from the exhibition."

That is partially true. Other areas included the old Central Line rail depot (now relocated at a lower level, below the development, while remaining operational throughout -- one of the reasons the development took 5 yrs to build!) and the old bus station. I'll add a note about the former.

Also of interest, a wartime munitions factory was located on (or possibly just north of) the site. Recent minor building works at an office block nearby caused at least 2 visits by the bomb squad to make safe/remove munitions (I believe WW1 vintage) which had been buried! The relevance to the Westfield works was that, during WW2, the factory was a major target and it was considered likely that several unexploded bombs would be found during the major excavations required for piling and for burying the rail depot. RAF photos of bomb damage showed regular lines of bomb craters...with an occasional gap, which would normally indicate a bomb which had not exploded and might remain buried. In fact, as far as I know, none were found, but local businesses, and possibly residents, from Television Centre to Shepherd's Bush Green had anti-shatter film put on their windows to avoid injury in case of unexpected explosion.

Unfortunately, I do not have adequate quality of information on this (eg exactly where was the factory; was it used in both wars, and if not, why were WW1 munitions found when the bombing was definitely WW2 (the bomb squad mentioned 500 lb or even perhaps one 1000 lb bomb!) etc. But if anyone has good info, it is worthy of inclusion somewhere on the Wiki, maybe even here.
