Questions[edit]

1. Where does the name Wawaset originate from?

2. Why was is called Schuetzen Park before ? (Schuetzen is German for marksmen) Was is used by the German community of Wilmington ?

  • The Delaware Saengerbund (German Club, founded 1853) and the German community of Wilmington held the first "Volksfest" in September 1883 in the Schuetzen Park. It was held there for the next several years. (Source: Delaware Saengerbund and Library Association). This does not explain why it was called "Schuetzen Park". Marksmen competitions at Volksfests are very common in parts of Germany though (esp. in Bavaria). Volkfests with emphasis on these competions are often called "Schuetzenfest". /ch/

Neighborhood Link[edit]

The Neighborhood external link doesn't provide any specific information and seems mostly commercial. Are people expected to search the site once there? Seems worth deleting but I defer to those Wikipedians more closely associated with Wilmington. Also, I have an ancestor whose Jan 1929 marriage notice refers to her post marriage residence as being in Wawaset, not Wawaset Park. Is Wawaset Park the preservation district name and not the original neighborhood name? Or just shorthand. I will be researching that further myself but I point it out here as food for thought.
