Hello, Materialscientist. The self-portrait, uploaded as File:Stoneman by Stoneman.jpg, is not released under a Creative Commons license. I checked the source, and Creative Commons option is disabled. This image may have commercial interests and would fail WP:NFCC#2; the academic license requires a fee. This is a fair-use image, and a creative commons license was never assumed. National Portrait Gallery, London does not sell its images, as far as I know. Materialscientist (talk) 07:08, 5 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Materialscientist: NPG sells them as prints and postcards. Some postcards, like this one, say: "Copyright: reproduction from this postcard is not permitted." They also sell both types of licenses: academic and professional. To me, images released under CC BY-NC-ND 3.0, even when sold also as prints, may be okay to use but only as acceptable fair-use images if used in specific pages appropriately.

However, in this case, the image is not released under a (non-free) CC license, and the licenses that the image is sold under require fees. I'm uncertain whether the use is "fair". If it is, then I think it is unacceptable. Of course, I respect your opinions and, if I fail to convince you, can't persuade you further, even when we both disagree on whether this is "fair use" and, if so, whether it is acceptable. I emailed NPG. NPG says that they approve "fair use" in low-resolution images and that they do not object usage of the images at Wikipedia. Therefore, I guess I was wrong about usage. (Copied from Talk:Ida Kar.) --George Ho (talk) 18:31, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
