eva cassidy was dead by 1996, so how could she have made it popular in 1997??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.160.247.121 (talkcontribs) 11:25, 18 November 2007

Most of Eva Cassidy's recordings were issued posthumously. I assumed that most people knew this. Ogg (talk) 20:54, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Avoiding Dogs[edit]

Nice story, but unlikely. Referrence needed, Pustelnik (talk) 02:29, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The song is attributed to Harriett Tubman. I can find no credible resources that can confirm this. In addition she supposedly did this in 1862. At that time she was serving in South Carolina and not associated with the Underground Railroad and had no way to introduce any song to slaves.

My understanding is this song was sung for many, many years prior to the war. No author has ever been given credit.Jeff G (talk) 17:13, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Move dubious sentence to here for discussion[edit]

The following sentence is moved here, rather than adding multiple tags. Any statement that claims "repeated reported..." requires source {{cn}}. The "so she might be its author" part implies WP:SYNTHESIS and/or WP:OR. And, as discussed above, this sentence would also qualify for {{dubious}} tag.   —71.20.250.51 (talk) 05:18, 28 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It has repeatedly been reported that Harriet Tubman, who helped hundreds of slaves flee to the North, sang this spiritual as a warning to runaway slaves so she might be its author.
