Proposal to change the title of this page - to: W.J. Gruffydd[edit]

I propose that

(a) the title of this page should be changed to 'W.J. Gruffydd' and

(b) the first sentence should open : 'William John Gruffydd (14 February 1881 – 29 September 1954), who published and was generally known as W.J. Gruffydd, ...'

The subject of this page was - and is - widely known in Wales, as poet, editor and writer, under the name "W.J. Gruffydd'. This is how his name appears on all the books and articles that he wrote, on the poems that he published, and on his popular anthology of Welsh verse. The title of this page raises exactly the same issues as the pages on T.H. Parry-Williams and R.S. Thomas - these major Welsh poets were - and are - known in Wales by the combination of initials and surname. Compare also the title of the page W. J. Gruffydd (Elerydd), from which this page is disambiguated. The full name of 'Elerydd' also was 'William John Gruffydd' (like the subject of the present page) - 'Elerydd' was his bardic name. Since their full names are identical, it is not possible to disambiguate these two entries, by giving the present page the title 'William John Gruffydd' and using initials for the title of the page on his namesake - 'W.J. Gruffydd'. Indeed, that adds to the potential for confusion - since Elerydd actually published prose works under his full name 'William John Gruffydd' - unlike the W.J. Gruffydd who is the subject of this page, who always used 'W.J. Gruffydd' for both his poetry and his prose works. In Wales the two are disambiguated where necessary by referring to the other W.J. Gruffydd as W.J. Gruffydd (Elerydd) - as his Wikipedia page already does. Gwedi elwch (talk) 08:30, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal - add a link to 'Welsh wikisource'[edit]

There should be a link from this biographical page to the page within whatever Wikisource lists W J Gruffydd's Welsh writings. Currently the link entitled "Works written by or about William John Gruffydd at Wikisource" simply points to a handful of articles by him in the DNB, which are in English. When I tried to add some of his most famous Welsh language publications to that list, they were removed and I was told off with the warning that that particular Wikisource was restricted to English language publications. This is a wholly unsatisfactory state of affairs. Currently there seems to be no way to get from this biography to a usable list of W J Gruffydd's works in the Welsh language. Help !! If this is a failing shared by the articles in the English language Wikipedia on other Welsh language authors, it is a serious problem. Gwedi elwch (talk) 04:36, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User:Gwedi elwch has noted above that this writer is customarily referred to as W. J. Gruffydd, whereas the other poet of the same name usually has his bardic name appended to his name, hence the latter's article being at W. J. Gruffydd (Elerydd). On JSTOR there are 236 results for "W. J. Gruffydd", 11 for ""W.J. Gruffydd" and 5 for "William John Gruffydd"; of these, only one is on Elerydd – so "W. J. Gruffydd" for the Celticist/politician would satisfy both WP:COMMONNAME and WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Ham II (talk) 17:44, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
