У 1978 році закінчив юридичний факультет Київського національного університету ім. Тараса Шевченка, спеціаліст права. Доктор юридичних наук, академік Академії правових наук України, академік Міжнародної Слов'янської академії, дійсний член Академії економічних наук, заслужений юрист України (з 1992 р.).

Громадська діяльність 1978-1989 Адвокат Київської міської колегії адвокатів. З 1989 Завідувач юридичною консультацією Шевченківського району м. Києва (1989-1991). Demonizing Medvedchuk[edit]

demonize: to portray as wicked and threatening.

It wouldn't necessarily be POV to say that the opposition demonized a figure in government (if it was true, of course), meaning they made him out to be a source of evil. It's a rather strong term, but can describe what someone says about another. Whether it's appropriate in this case is a matter of judgement, and you'd have to have read more news or press releases from the period than I have to decide. —Michael Z. 2006-01-25 23:52 Z

I was cleaning the article up and noticed it had "According to a September/October 2013 poll by Razumkov Centre a party lead by Medvedchuk would score 0.9% of the votes during elections" followed by a sentence about his limited influence. Doesn't getting less than 1% already imply limited support? Looking at it again, the sentence could work if we're talking specifically about the EU/Russia issue. This man is not so important. But I keep (like in 2013 Ukraine pro-European Union#Police response and my above A leaked (the authenticity of which cannot be verified) Kremlin strategy to bring Ukraine back into Russia’s orbit... post) seeing things were people try to make him look like the Ukrainian Illuminati (conspire to control Ukrainian political affairs by masterminding events and planting agents in government and corporations). I do not like any conspiracy theory and so far these theories he has power seem not to be backed up with concrete facts. Hence I find it important it is mentioned in the lead Medvedchuk has currently a marginal influence in Ukraine. Maybe he's closer to Svengoolie than svengali. But don't you think it would be more effective and in line with wiki policies to use the facts to demonstrate that? For instance, one of your sources talks about his bloc's electoral history and support of the customs union. That and maybe a quote from this one (apparently his campaigns have a "miserable efficiency rate") seems like the kind of hard data Wikipedia is built on.

Photo on Infobox for April 2022[edit]

I have a very negative opinion on Medvedchuk but... a photo conflict is not what we need... There is a reason that the picture on the infobox of the wikipedia article about Saddam Hussein is not the picture taken right before his execution.... The picture should be his most recognizable.... not the latest. Bad source[edit]

We are here on Wikipedia to make a great encyclopedia, we do not do things for selfish reasons (people like Viktor Medvedchuk only do things for themselves, don't be like Viktor Medvedchuk). Viktor Medvedchuk in handcuffs[edit]

Hello @Lute88. Assuming and not conceding that this photo was taken and circulated legally, I think that it poses what WP:IUP calls a "moral issue". The photo is most likely intended to demean and humiliate the subject. In any case, even if the photo was not against policy, it would still be up to the editors to decide whether or not to include it in the article. I understand that the photo has informational value, but to me it seems very invasive of a living person's privacy and dignity. I agree with Drmies, your request to delete this image is completely unwarranted for the following reasons:
  1. He was just a prisoner, not a prisoner of war (POW)
  2. He is a public figure
  3. This is probably a matter of personal taste, but I do not see such image as anything denigrating or inappropriate. Such images made after an arrest are common on our pages. See here, for example. Does such image denigrates Varlam Shalamov, a great Russian writer I like? Not at all. Why it should? It tells a lot more about his persecutors. Seriously, whatever one likes Medvedchuk or not, this is just his image after his arrest, nothing more. The image is pretty much illustrative of what had happen with him, and it was an important chapter of his life.
It is a lot more important what exactly did Merdvedchuk reveal to Ukrainian investigators while being in the custody. Oleksii Arestovych said in an interview that Medvedchuk revealed "everything he knew", but I have no idea what exactly that was and what can be reliably sourced. I'm on my mobile and don't see clearly. Is Shalamov in handcuffs? I don't see them. Besides it's a photo from the 1930s. Here we're speaking about a living person. I understand from your reply that Shalamov was not in handcuffs. Good for him. Do we have the photo of some Western politicians in handcuffs for a comparison? Or is it always "the others" those whose degradation doesn't offend us? By the way, being in handcuffs ("the face") is bad, being shown in handcuffs to the world ("the mirror") adds something to it, is not a mere reflex showing a reality of life, and may require some justification. My opinion is not that "strange". If what one reads here is correct, in many countries such as Japan, France and others it is forbidden for the media to publish photographs of handcuffed people: Handcuffs#National_regulations_regarding_depiction_of_handcuffed_people. This is also the case of Italy (Article 114 c. 6-bis of the Code of criminal procedure). Most importantly, according to the European Court of Human Rights measures of restraint such as handcuffing may give rise to an issue under Article 3 (prohibition of torture) when they entail "public exposure" (Svinarenko and Slyadnev v. Russia [GC], 2014, § 117). In the case of persons arrested or under criminal prosecution, the European Court ruled on various occasions that the release of photographs by police authorities to the media constitutes an interference with their right to privacy (see e.g. Khuzhin and Others v. Russia, 2008, §§ 115-118; Sciacca v. Italy, 2005, §§ 29-31). Given that Ukraine is a party to the European Convention on Human Rights, it's quite likely that this image is unfairly obtained under WP:IUP. As its objective is to debase and humiliate Medvedchuk, the photo is one of those images that unfairly demean or ridicule the subject and unreasonably intrude into the subject's private or family life. I replied above already, but again, speaking about your deletion request for the image [1], you made several arguments:
  1. "Isn't a detention centre a publicly owned space where people have an expectation of privacy? ". - No, it is not. Besides, the photographs of people made after the arrest are routinely used on our pages, e.g. Martin_Luther_King_Jr.#Birmingham_campaign,_1963, and for a good reason.
  2. "the image of a person in handcuffs may be perceived as degrading." - Yes, that maybe for some viewers, but this is not a reason to delete such images from WP pages. There are many images in WP some people may perceive as degrading, such as the image of arrested MLK above. But it is an important historical image that improves the page. Same is here.
  3. "Exposure of a prisoner of war (POW) to public curiosity is also a violation of international humanitarian law (Third Geneva Convention)." - He was not a prisoner of war, just a Ukrainian civilian who was arrested and imprisoned by Ukrainian authorities for his alleged crimes. I don't think so. Since he was born in Russia proper he may just get Russian citizenship. Crimeans got Russian citizenships quick smart.
The idea that the EU agreement was to be signed in another language, without translation into Ukrainian, was interesting because it would have meant the signature was not valid, as coerced. Ukrainians do not know what bullet they dodged because 'trans-Atlantic Integration" means to change everything one way to US conditions. If you can not and will not say why they are there they do not be there. What exactly is wrong with the article in your view? You might think that throwing around sentence like "For shame" is very clever... On 27 March 2024, Czechia imposed sanctions against Viktor Medvedchuk and Artyom Marchevsky and the pro-Russian news site Voice of Europe, which spread information discourage the European Union from sending aid to Ukraine, which has been battling a Russian invasion since February 2022, Russia's long-term efforts to influence democratic processes in Europe and to gain political influence in various European countries before the European Parliament elections. .

Some European politicians cooperating with the news site were paid from Russian funds. The payments targeted politicians from Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands and Poland. The far-right German party Alternative for Germany (AfD) was also involved.

Medvedchuk was involved in funding and controlled a number of influence networks and Marchevsky was in charge of Voice of Europe content and communication with politicians. The Czech Security Information Service (BIS) discovered that the pro-Russian network was indulging in activities that would have a serious impact on the security of the Czech Republic and the EU and Ukraine.
