Premiere: query[edit]

Cultural depictions of Queen Victoria says:

  • In 1937 Lord Chamberlain the Earl of Cromer ruled that no British sovereign may be portrayed on the British stage until 100 years after his or her accession. For this reason, Laurence Housman's play Victoria Regina (1935), which had earlier appeared at the Gate Theatre Studio in London with Pamela Stanley in the title role, could not have its British premiere until the centenary of Queen Victoria's accession, 20 June 1937.

Doesn't the highlighted part mean that the British premiere was the one at the Gate Theatre, whenever that was, which was before Cromer's 1937 diktat? -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 10:17, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Gate Theatre Studio, which as a members' club was outside the Lord Chamberlain's remit, was at 16A Villiers Street, London WC2, underneath the arches of Charing Cross station. It was closed forever by bomb damge during the war, NRPanikker (talk) 05:42, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
