Problems[edit]

Frankly I think it was a bit of a mistake accepting this draft, although at first glance it looks ok. But most of the article is about the Middle Ages, not the Renaissance. It isn't well-written, or even very accurate if you know the subject. It doesn't link to other articles on Venice, & I can't really see a useful place for it. @Johnbod: Good points. Do you think it should be deleted, or can it be saved, possibly by taking info from the Italian WP article? --1990'sguy (talk) 01:14, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's very full, but mostly on painting, which we cover at Venetian school (art), which is almost all on the Renaissance. Any expansion should go there, I think. There are other bits in the Italian that we don't really have articles on, but what with much fuller treatments than here at the other two articles I've added as "mains", there isn't much left. Maybe the guild section could be salvaged, but then you ask yourself, what does "The Venetian community in the Renaissance was constructed on the emphasis on the relationships between neighbours, ritual brothers and kinsmen all living together in equality from the upper and lower social class." actually mean - I doubt the very good source says anything much like that. It doesn't cover music, printing or glass, other important topics. I'd be inclined just to redirect to ? - where I don't exactly know. Johnbod (talk) 01:26, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Johnbod: If the article needs to become a redirect, either redirecting it to History of the Republic of Venice or Italian Renaissance seems most appropriate to me. That said, I personally would prefer improving the article rather than deleting/redirecting it (assuming it's realistically possible). --1990'sguy (talk) 02:41, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(Phew! You want to archive this page.) History of the Republic of Venice is a political history of the Venetian state; the cultural history is in the long history section at Venice. Italian Renaissance so far only gives Florence its own section. I'm not at all against a Venetian Renaissance article, but this one would need near-total rewriting to reach an acceptable standard - that might be relatively quick if one had the sources, & could check what they actually say. There is a case for a disam page perhaps. Johnbod (talk) 17:11, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
We could possibly create a short section for Venice in the "Italian Renaissance" article? I prefer improving the article, but I don't have the time or necessary experience in the topic area to do so. --1990'sguy (talk) 21:04, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm copying this section to the talk page there, in the hope we attract more views/offers of help. I suggest we continue there. Johnbod (talk) 16:54, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Actually, the relevant section (Venice#Decline) is very poor on V Renaissance culture, but equally anything copied from here would need substantial rewriting, as the quality is so poor. I've taken one little bit to the architecture article. I suspect this indeed the best way forward. There may be other snippets that can be re-used, and a disam page might still be a good idea.
