Status of "TIC" data[edit]

There has been a statement that data for supergiants from the TESS Input Catalog (TIC) is unreliable. That may or may not be correct. However, the luminosity and temperature for this star are taken from a 2020 paper which specifically states that the TIC data is consistent with other sources for the stars in that paper and gives a (small-ish) margin of error for that data. It would be inappropriate for us to boycott such peer-reviewed data (ie. the temperature and luminosity) without some other source to back us up. It may be possible to find additional sources for the temperature and luminosity, especially since both are variable. The radius in this article is taken directly from TIC, however it closely matches the radius that would be calculated from the luminosity and temperature, most likely because that's how it was derived by TESS. Removing it on the basis that it is unreliable would be pointless since it could be replaced by an almost-identical radius calculated from data that is stated to be reliable in the 2020 paper. Even if the methods themselves are accurate, the Gaia parallaxes for most of these stars aren't. Though I'm not sure about if it should be removed in the case where it's the only thing available. nussun (talk) 07:15, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
