Picture[edit]

The picture is nice, but of no direct relevance to the article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.178.94.239 (talk) 23:57, November 12, 2005‎ (UTC)

This is the picture of the United Nations Office at Vienna, home of the Office. I have replaced it with a newer one and placed it under representation so that it looks now consistent with wiki page on United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sergiy Negoda (talkcontribs) 21:57, June 7, 2012‎ (UTC)

Space Ambassador appointment[edit]

I removed the section with the following text:

The U.N. Outerspace Affairs will be appointing the first "space ambassador" an astrophysicist who will be the human contact with any newly discovered extraterrestrial life.[1]

The story has been widely denied, so unless and until there's a change it shouldn't be part of the article. For example, see http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/blog/2010/sep/27/un-alien-ambassador-mazlan-othman (and on a slightly snobby note, I wouldn't want any facts that were reliant on a reference to the Daily Mail in there!) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.220.43.81 (talk) 11:22, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As of 7 June 2012, the half of article was dedidcated to "space ambassador" story which is of not so important relevance to the aim of the article: to describe the Office. In general, as the "rumor" was clearly denied, the story and references to it should be removed at all. In addition, this information is well presented in more relevant wiki article - Mazlan Othman. Therefore, the paragraphs are removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sergiy Negoda (talkcontribs) 21:34, June 7, 2012‎ (UTC)

United Nations General Assembly decision 33/426 (1978)[edit]

I think an article should be written on United Nations General Assembly decision 33/426 (1978) which was approved on December 18 of that year. This is a document which mandates the establishment of a UN organization to coordinate UFO and extraterrestrial information and research from member countries. An initiative was made in 2008 with the UN Secretary General to effect this decision which has laid dormant since 1978. This can also been seen in context of exopolitics movement for which we used to have a separate article. (see Talk:Exopolitics). __meco (talk) 16:55, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

General[edit]

As of 7 June 2012, the article contained a lot of information which was partially or completely incorrect. As for the general representation, which contained strange logos: there is no such things as "UNOOSA" logo. OOSA is the part of the Secretariat of the United Nations and, as such, can use only the emblem of the United Nations (its use here requires permission). Removed. I am Legal Officer of OOSA since 2003 and will from now on try to help to improve this article. Feel free to contact me if you have questions/objections. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sergiy Negoda (talkcontribs) 21:40, June 7, 2012‎ (UTC)

I have undone you removal of sourced material. If you believe this should not be in the article, you had better present this here for a consensus evaluation. Otherwise feel free to rebut any claims with referenced sources. __meco (talk) 22:20, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. As for removal of the sourced material, please see my view and proposal under "Space Ambassador" above. Sergiy Negoda —Preceding undated comment added 22:38, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK. But if you have a problem with the legality of the logo, I suggest you follow the image link to Wikimedia Commons and nominate it for deletion there. __meco (talk) 22:42, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Meco. The main issue is that OOSA does not have, and can't have, logo. In practice the Office uses the United Nations emblem, as it is a part of the Secretariat of the United Nations. I have changed the representation so that it is in line with (1) other wiki articles on various United Nations agencies; (2) UN practice - we place the official United Nations emblem, then "United Nations" and only then a name of a unit. This is also consistent with the representation on the official website of the Office. Look forward to working with you and others interested on the development of the article.Sergiy Negoda
Still, by that measure the image file, which is still available and being used by other wikimedia projects, should not be used since any use of it will be misleading. Therefore I suggest you nominate the file for deletion. __meco (talk) 07:38, 8 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
