In the original lyrics of “Ще не вмерла України і слава, і воля”, Chubynsky uses both “ь” and “ъ”, e. g. in 3rd stanza, 1st line: “нашъ гетьмане”, cf. Reprint of the 1st publication, in 1863. The “ъ”, apparently, designates a vowel, as can be seen from the syllable count. What sound corresponds to this character? When (and how long) was it used, and was it ever part of the official Ukrainian orthography? --Knottel (talk) 11:00, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The syllable count has turned out to be a red herring: just in one particular line a “ъ” corresponds with a missing syllable. Hence, there is not sufficient evidence for “ъ” representing a vowel. Still two questions remain unanswered, so far: was “ъ” ever part of the Ukrainian orthography, and how are the words containing “ъ” characters pronounced? --Knottel (talk) 18:17, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
