League, Super and other not so great Cups[edit]

As a principle, I do not include these cups in the listings of major titles.Their sporting value is quite questionable, beyond this, they are not really held everywhere, and thus make title stats of teams, players and coaches not really comparable. Generally, those types of competitions are often not much more but a season warm up that does not much elese but adding just another title to an already reasonably successful team. These titles do not really establish or define success, they are mostly rather just an outcome of success.

On the other side, yes for some minor clubs that have not won much else, it is a nice thing to have that type of title on their letterheads, probably amongst indoor titles, etc. It also provides an opportunity for some players and coaches to at least at some stage experience what it is like to win something. Nice, but not much more.

These days, were every reasonable team is already participating in the Champions League it is difficult enough to see any real value in competitions such as the UEFA Cup. With the passing of time, it seems, that Franz Beckenbauer's definition of this tournament as the "loser's cup" hold more and more true. He incidentally said this before he won the UEFA Cup himself in 1996.

Similar issues also exist with various South American championships which are held in a half yearly modus, often termed as Apertura and Clausura. E.g., I thoroughly respect Argentine football, and who would not. But then, what value has an Argentine half series championship compared to a European title? Fact remains, they cannot be really compared, which amongst the coaches affects for instance the highly valued Carlos Bianchi. For arguments sake, I have less problems rating a major Brazilian state championship (eg., São Paulo, Rio and Rio Grande do Sul) of the olden days before the inception of the full national competition as a major achievement. The record of Otto Glória for instance includes some Brazilian state championships.

Benitez did not win all of the traditional UEFA trophies why does it appear to be so in this article? I am removing the part that refers to him at the end of the first paragraph.

NPOV in Discussion of Intercontinental Cup[edit]

The point of view expressed "Borussia as finalists were given an opportunity of playing in their stead against South American champions Boca Juniors in the finals of this competition. After a respectable 2–2 away, regretfully the club abused the return match as a warm up for the 1978–79 season and lost in Karlsruhe quite unspectacularly with 0–3." is an opinion and is not backed up with any references. The fact is that the second leg was played at the start of the 1978-79 season, and a number of their first leg team had retired over the summer or transferred, including Jupp Heynckes and Reiner Bonhof, so it was a quite different team. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kgilbert78 (talkcontribs) 21:06, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
