Hyphen[edit]

Over in the WP article on African Americans, opinion seems to be that when used as a noun African American has no hyphen, but does when it is used as an adjective. I edited this article to reflect that. Thomas R. Fasulo (talk) 20:59, 31 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Book editions and citations[edit]

This book is available in paperback as:

Purdon, Eric (2000). Black Company: The Story of Subchaser 1264. Annapolis: U.S. Naval Institute Press. ISBN 978-1557506580

However, I have the original 1972 hardback edition published by Robert B. Luce, Washington-New York. All page numbers used as citations in the article, refer to the 1972 edition. Thomas R. Fasulo (talk) 14:57, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Info box[edit]

I created and filled in the Info box as much as I could. Statistics I used come from Purdon's book as well as NavSource. The latter site has some really neat, as well as depressing, images of PC 1264. See the article for the link. Thomas R. Fasulo (talk) 00:28, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The ship's career[edit]

I've been wanting to get back to complete the story of the PC-1261 for some time and always found a reason not to. Tonight I bit the bullet and have added a lot more information on the ship's career. I'm up to January 1945, where the ship has a major change of assignment and will leave it at that until I, hopefully, return to the article tomorrow.

One of the major problems I am encountering is that Eric Purdon's book is written in the form of an interesting reminiscence and not an objective or detailed history. One particular problem is his habit of not indicating dates for many of the events he writes about. As a result, I can't indicate specific dates for many of the events and have to scan back and forth to find any references to what day or month the event is taking place in. I am not estimating any dates or time periods in the article, but I do indicate dates or time frames, as in "first week of November", when Purdon mentions such. Thomas R. Photographs[edit]

Oh, the excitement! :-) I just found three more U.S. Navy images of the PC-1264 and its crew (including the mascot). However, I will have to wait until I get back to work in a week or so before I can scan and add them to the article. Thomas R. Fasulo (talk) 18:23, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Possible submarine contact[edit]

While escorting convoy NG-448 to Guantanamo, PC-1264's sonar identified a large underwater object near the convoy and engaged it for three hours. No date is given for this attack. But Purdon's book states the ship escorted the convoy for "a week at the end of July." It also states the incident happened on the first day. Later the text states the convoy arrived in Guantanamo on 27 July. Therefore, making an educated guess, I placed text in the article stating the incident happened on 21 July. If anyone has a problem with this, we can amend that to state "late July." Thomas R. Fasulo (talk) 18:59, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
