What is the correct pronunciation of the word "toile"?

Thickness of toile[edit]

The three main definitions of toile provided in thefreedictionary.com all include either the adjective 'sheer' or 'transparent'. Hence my insertion of 'sheer' in the introduction (which was subsequently reverted by TW).Penelope Gordon (talk) 05:59, 23 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There might be some confusion with the VERY similar term "voile" - which DOES specifically describe a sheer cotton fabric. Basic dictionary definitions are often quite ignorant/simplistic about specialist terminology. The Merriam-Webster definition is: "any of many plain or simple twill weave fabrics; especially : linen". Also, This publication from the Textile Terms and Definitions Committee just says it is a French word for fabric. That is an "internationally recognised authority on textile terminology and is used worldwide in trademark registration, litigations and customs' formalities."
