Question on intro

Should Tina Turner be identified as Native American in the article? Like myself, she has Native grandparents, but having Native ancestors does not make one Native. First Nations folks have a very specific experience with oppression that most Black folks know nothing about, even though we face racial oppression too.

Consider this: Most white Southerners have African and Native ancestry, but would we dare call them Black or Indian? No! Most people would never make that mistake.

They're her grandparents, so that's close enough to make it notable. Plus, she does have Native features as well. I have only one Native American great grandparent, admidst an otherwise African-American family line, so I don't really claim anything else but Black. --FuriousFreddy 16:35, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)

182 Million People for a Single Concert?

There's no way 182 million people paid to see a Tina Turner concert. But they did. There isn't a venue in the world that could house that many people (Maracana Stadium in Rio seats about 180-184 thousand). Cite?

She did hold the record by drawing that 182,000 (not 182 million) fans to her Break Every Rule tour at the huge Maracana Municipal Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I guess that was in 1988. That was in a single show by a single performer alone. This particular show was also released on video and now DVD too. Check it out. It was I guess one of the greatest & most massive one-night rock & roll show I have ever seen. I do not know whether any other performer broke this record for a single show. From this show onwards Tina Turner continued to be identified with massive crowd concerts in huge stadiums.

I don't think the information about Tyler Jeter belongs in the introduction, plus it doesn't really read as encyclopedic. I did a quick check on google and couldn't find a listing on Tyler Jeter, and he doesn't pop up on imdb, either. Therefore, I'm removing the mention. YggdrasilsRoot 02:05, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

There's no such thing as a "great great cousin" so I'm deleting the new mention, too. I don't think Tyler Jeter is a person of interest, since I could find no mention of him elsewhere (no google, no IMDB, and this is supposed to be someone in the movie industry). If someone could provide a credible source, I would maybe feel differently, but as it stands, I see no need for this inclusion. It doesn't add anything to the article and actually sounds like a vanity link/mention. Selected filmography

As per Wikipedia is not a collection of lists, I have reduced the "Filmography" section to just the films that have Wiki articles, and renamed it to "Selected filmography" ... people can click the IMDb External link at the end of the article to see the subject's full filmography with links to information about each of their films.

I have also used [[19xx in film|19xx]] tags for the years of the films, something that Some Other Editors do not appear to understand, since they seem to think that just linking [[19xx]] somehow has encyclopedic value.

Anonymous edits without comments may be reverted by anyone.

Black is her social racial identity. She was socialized as Black as were her recent ancestors. Black isn't an actual bloodline. The previous commentator is absolutely right. Tina Turner found out that she had no Native American ancestry in the series African American Lives 2. They also pointed out that most African Americans do not, in fact, have Native American ancestry (although they like to believe so). That does not make her the biggest selling solo artist of all time. Sales is based an 'record' sales, and even if the 150 million is correct, it is way off the known figures for any of many other solo artists, male and female. Refer List of best-selling music artists. Stop adding this falsehood to the article. As for biggest selling concert artist, also probably not true, so a reference is required, or it should be removed. I have been through 1,000+ net sites, and there is little data on overall sales. Those I did find rane from 50m to 66m. Nothing like the 150 million reported. I have linked to the two highest found. Total sales of 150 million

I have removd this for the following reasons. That as a solo artist she sold 60 million, then this means that prior to her solo career she would have had to sell 90 million. Within RIAA, there are no creditations for any of the earlier albums, so it is not even remotely possible to have been achieveable without sales in the American market. It should also be noted that if 90 million was achieved, Ike and Tina Turner would have been one of the biggest sellers of the 60/s and 70's. Also not possible Maggott2000 20:11, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Albums sales data

The data showing is neither referenced or accurate. Should some detail be found, then it should be added. "Foreign Affair" said 10m, ref says 6m. "Private Dancer" only 2 sources say 20m, all others say 10 - 11 million only. "All the Best" says 5m, but was not a best selling album in 2004 or 2005 (Refer UWC [1]). "Break Every Rule" says 15m. Sold 3m in the US, 400,000 in Germany, and 600,000 in the UK. these being the three largest markets (and Japan, but foreign sales are not big there), it is not even plausable to have sold this amount of albums sales worldwide. It is a verifiable source. I do not consider it realistic, but wikipedia is not about truth, it is about verifiable sources. One could debate that the authors of the article are not subject matter experts in this field, as they are technical writers, but you can argue that for nearly all referencing. This 180 million record sales needs to be corrected. I love Tina Turner, but she by-no-all-means has sold 180 million albums! That would mean she has sold more than Whitney Houston, Madonna, and Mariah Carey and that is simply not true. These three artists are in the 150-160 million range and they have had numerous big selling albums, not just one big album like Tina (What's Love Got To Do With It) and a few moderately selling albums like Tina. And trust me, I love Tina. But if this article is referring to her album and single sales added together, then that needs to be stated like: ...total album and single sales combined of 180 million. or something to that effect. Proper writing requires letting the reader know what you are actually stating, and not leading the reader into a false interpretation. It makes no sense to read a few different articles and, for example, it states Act A has "110 million albums sold"; then read Act B's article and it states "130 million records sold". This will lead many readers to believe Act B sold more albums than Act A, when in reality Act A sold 110 million albums and 50 million singles, and Act B sold 80 million albums and 40 million singles. If you are not telling the reader you are combining figures, it leads to a false impression that Act B has sold more albums than Act A. This is because many people will read records to mean actual albums. The definition (rightfully) can go either way: albums only or albums and singles combined. On the name "Tina Turner"

This is a brain dump of the absolute truth as I know it. Much may be wrong, and I am not going to edit the page. It is probably slanted toward Ike's side of the story. It is provided as grounds for further research. I refer to Tina Turner as "Anna" to be unambiguous.

Ike created the name "Ike and Tina Revue" and named the singer in the act "Tina". There was at least one singer other than Anna who played the role of Tina on stage in the Ike and Tina Revue, before Ike married Anna. She wasn't called Tina Turner until after the marriage, and no one else was called Tina Turner, but Ike claims that she cannot use the stage name Tina Turner, because that was her name as part of the act and not her legal name. (She could call herself Anna Turner, if she wanted.)

Anna had walked out on the tour and would likely be found liable for damages. Ike was threatening to cease selling anything where she had royalties, and he had both that right and that temperment. She would need to build her career with a new name, while paying Ike for damages, while Ike is performing with a new woman named Tina Turner. This is why Anna gave up all her royalties for past work and her share of Ike's millions stashed all over the world in exchange for the name Tina Turner.— Randall Bart ^(talk) 20:53, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Most of that is true. But what was left out is that Tina (I will call her "Tina" as she has been going by that name longer than she's been going by Anna) could have possibly won in court and would NOT have to pay damages to Ike for walking out on him on tour. Her life and health were at stake as she was consistently being beaten. For instance, what if I hired you to fix and upgrade 100 computers in my office and it was going to take you three months to do so. Now what if I beat you every day you came in, and you ended up in the hospital on a few occasions, so you stop coming. I cannot realistically expect to win in court because you didn't finish fixing my computers. What most likely WOULD happen is: You will get to keep the money you've earn so far for the computers you did actually fix; or you will get paid in full on the contracted amount, even though you didn't finish, because it was due to MY behavior that you couldn't finish fixing the computers. And let's not forget, in Ike and Tina's situation, he had money tucked away alright, but they also owed lots of money to the record company. Tina was half responsible for this because she was part of the act as well, even though Ike never personally shared much of the money with her (the record company has nothing to do with that, however). So Tina may have walked away from what money Ike did manage to put away, but she also walked away from the debt he had accrued in THEIR names. At this point Tina left Ike in 1976, and she was now divorcing him in 1978. She didn't need this to drag on any longer. Essential she wanted nothing to do with Ike whatsoever, and getting spousal support payments from him, or working on business deals he started while they were married would have kept him in some part of her life. So she walked away from it all; the money and the debt.

Yes, Ike did think of the stagename Tina for his lead female singer in the group because he like how it sounded with Turner. Whatever woman singer he had in the band, she was going to be called Tina. There was a different woman (women) during the early years before success, but it didn't last because she was either tired of the abuse by Ike and left, or maybe she was not as good. Either way, when Anna became Tina Turner, it was not only a boon for her but she took Ike to levels he had never known before either. So a judge allowing her to keep the name after their split was a fair tradeoff. After years of abuse and raising the children (some of which she was not the mother of) she left, figuring she could one day make a living with the name she worked hard for. And she was right; after releasing a couple of sub-par performing albums, she released "Private Dancer" and she was back, and her career was still successful for several years after that. Even now, she can likely sell-out an arena. I like Tina but two things I wanted to point out. First, it states Tina is a singer, dancer, actress, songwriter, and entertainer in the intro. No need to list "entertainer" because if someone does all the aforementioned things that makes them an entertainer. Its like saying someone is a surgeon, and then saying they are also a "doctor". That's obvious. So if she's an entertainer, what exactly is she doing outside of the things already named? Secondly, it states the sales for "Private Dancer" are 10-11 million or 20 million. That's a big gap, and the article loses a little credibility with a statement like that. If sales can be given for other albums released by other artists, then how come they don't know if "PD" sold 10 million or 20 million. INTRODUCTION

I took offense to the "long, well-proportioned legs" part, which seems to absurdly objectify her and does not have a source (i.e. who says that she is well known for her legs?). I can't imagine an encyclopedia entry making the same reference for a man. I tried taking this out, but it was reverted without comment. Fair enough, but I'd like to hear why this sexist nonsense should remain.

I agree the reference to her legs seems silly, but her legs are well known in popular culture. She had a long-standing deal with Hanes I think modeling pantyhose and did many commercials.--Lindsay 04:52, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

I dont like the wording either, but it's true and better than 'nice legs' and I think its a bit silly to expect a source or citation for this sort of information (If I say the world is round, do I need to quote my sources?). --Dutchdavey (talk)

Herbie Hancock's River: The Joni Letters Grammy noms

Shouldn't it be included in the article that Herbie Hancock's album to which Tina contributed earned several Grammy nominations this year (50th Annual Grammy Awards), including Album of the Year, and that Tina is cited among the featured artists in this particular nomination? See reference http://www.grammy.com/GRAMMY_Awards/50th_Show/list.aspx - Lila, in December 13th, 2007.

This doesnt go under this category but does fit the grammy information. Tina Turner DID NOT win four grammy awards in 1985 and she IS NOT a winner of 8 grammies (unless you count We Are the World and Princes Trust and then she would be a 10 time grammy winner). Tina won best rock vocal, best pop, and record of the year (that she shared with Terry Britten). SONG OF THE YEAR was not a win for her. It was a win for the songwriters. Now, it's actually a win! It won the Grammy for Best Album of the year! Please, that IS worthy of mentioning in the article. Turner was one of the featured artists in the best album of 2007! - Lila, in February 11th, 2008.

I agree. Someone should add that Tina has won a Grammy! It is one of the most important awards in the music business, and Tina hasn't won one since 1988! Check out the official Grammy Award Winners Database for the reference: [4]

Ike's Comments about Tina

I just heard a reairing of an interview with Ike Turner from the 1990s on Fresh Air and he claims that Tina Turner's real name is Nell something. He also says that they were never officially married at all, it was what we would consider a common law marriage (my term, not his). It was interesting because Terry Gross was citing basic biographical information about Tina that he said wasn't true which is odd because they weren't any pieces of information that would reflect badly on him, he was just correcting what he thought was misinformation.
