Curious405 making nested quotes[edit]
The quotes should not be present at all. We should paraphrase the content. At either rate MOS:QWQ is specific that quotations within quotations should be formatted this way, but these are simply quotations. Whether they are quotes from a book or not (which was not explained nor is it supported in the article) they are simply quotes. Walter Görlitz (talk) 03:08, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
- Walter Görlitz, I agree with you that this article has a lot of quotes that maybe should be paraphrased. I didn't write most of the text. However, I have read the source material. The quotes given in this article are quotations by other people in the source, therefore they are quotes within quotes. For instance, we could write it as: According to Bob Leszczak, "Paul Gordon, who co-wrote the song with Bobby Caldwell (of "What You Won't Do for Love fame) shared, 'Bobby had just moved into a new apartment, and all he had was a drum machine and a chair. ... We spent a couple of inspired days knocking out that song. It was a lot of fun working with Bobby.' " Which is an exact quote from the Leszczak source. It is material quoted from Leszczak that is quoted from Paul Gordon. And I have to add, having just re-read the source, the quote from Paul Gordon as shown in this article isn't correct in another way. A sentence was removed and not indicated with an ellipse, as I show in my quote above. Danaphile had the nested quotations right when he/she originally wrote it. My edit put it back to Danaphile's, with a small space between the " and ', per MOS:QWQ. This is interesting, I've never been in an edit war before. I'm changing it back one more time, then if you still disagree I think we need to get another editor in on it. In the meantime, I will look for a similar example/explanation from a reputable source to show you.Curious405 (talk) 04:05, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
- Regardless of whether they are quotes in a book, that's not the way they're presented. If they were presented as, "Cetera said, 'I hate Wikilawyering'", then you would have a point, but they are presented as: Cetera said, "I hate Wikilawyering". (MOS:LQ notwithstanding). They're not nested quotes. And while we're at it, read WP:BRD: "If your bold edit was reverted, then do not re-revert to your version." Walter Görlitz (talk) 04:09, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
- Walter Görlitz, I think we might both be right. See No. 3 at http://libraryfaqs.cu-portland.edu/faq/8555 regarding quoting someone who has been quoted by the author of the article. If we leave it your way, then I believe the citation needs to state something like "as cited in Leszczak" or "as qtd in Leszczak" to clarify that this is presented as a quote in the Leszczak source.Curious405 (talk) 13:12, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
