External Links[edit]

I have just removed 2 links, the dead Korean site and an unofficial Romanian site. Because user Lraccajr believes that the Romanian site is a valid link, I thought it best to open the discussion here. Personally, I believe that it violates both the policies regarding external links (relevant portion here) and the manual of style (relevant portion here). Other opinions? First off this is the site in question *Romanian Site
yes i do believe that the Romanian site is an valid link because the owners of the site have received permission from Wemade to run their server. What i am seeing is the only 2 external links left here point to "pay" servers and eliminate any links to "free" servers. my point being if you guys are ok with the external links to the pay servers you guys shouldn't mind if a free server link is up there as an example as well.
I am not the owner of the Romanian site nor have i made anything on the site nor was i getting anything in return for posting the link here so there was NO self gain whatsoever.
The only rule i do see broken is the fact that the people who have been here awhile want to dominate and warn people about any and everything.
This is not the first of my contributions that have been edited almost as soon as it was up....Lraccajr
I think the question to ask in this case is whether or not the site is official. Per Wiki policy regarding external links, only official links are expressly allowed, and high-profile or high-quality links may be allowed on a case-by-case basis and by community consensus. Take a look at the page on Dungeons & Dragons, for instance. You'll see links to the official site and a few unofficial sites with little to no advertising and historical content that is simply not available at the official site. Wizards of the Coast (which produces Dungeons & Dragons products) also allows other companies to release their own materials, but those companies no more deserve a link on the Dungeons & Dragons entry than this Romanian site does at The Legend of Mir. As I see it, this link would be appropriate only on a Wikipedia entry about the site itself (though I don't believe such a page would pass notability guidelines) or (possibly) if it became much more popular and dropped the prominent advertising.
Now you do have a point that there are multiple people reverting your changes and giving you warnings. We do not own these articles, but we are all responsible for following Wikipedia policies and guidelines, and there is no time-limit before we can act to revert changes which violate these policies and guidelines. I'm sorry if you feel like we're coming down on you, but know that it's nothing personal, we're just trying to keep Wikipedia free of things that really don't belong here. But that's just my $0.02. Thank you for showing me the light on a few extra details, for instance, where you say "You'll see links to the official site and a few unofficial sites with little to no advertising and historical content that is simply not available at the official site." I point this out because if you go to the Romanian site for Legend of Mir 3, you will see that it has more information on characters in the game and more information on items than the US site or the European site has.
All it takes is a little click on each link to see and here are all three links in question.
If you go to all three sites yu will see the difference in different Monsters and characters.
Also one last point, you stated it violates this rule manual of style (relevant portion here)
stating about English sites only. Even tho this is a Romanian site it is In English. All it takes is a click of the link to read it.Lraccajr
I've browsed through the Romanian site and it certainly does have more information in some areas than the official sites. I've also found other fansites that have just as much information (or more) as this Romanian site, and some of them have fewer ads (or none at all), but of course we can't include them all, per WP policy. I think that a compromise in this case would be to link to the Open Directory Project via the {{dmoz}} template, as it suggests in WP:EL. Ideas? Wyatt Riot 13:36, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok i agree to this compromise, you have been here longer than me and do know alot more.
And thank you for all your help wyatt, I have learned more from you than anything else about wikipedia. Lraccajr 17:38, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No problem at all. I hope you enjoy your time here. :)
I went ahead and added the dmoz template and also submitted Zentaur to dmoz, so hopefully it'll show up there as soon as they update their category (which may take some time). Wyatt Riot 22:42, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you sir, you have really helped me out alot here. I cannot wait to learn so many more new things about here..Lraccajr 02:04, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
