Plot length[edit]

I've been criticized for it being too long. However, since the script is very difficult to find, I've made it detailed, and indicated the original scenes. It's something that I would want, and I would think other researchers would want it as well. -- kosboot (talk) 11:21, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps I'll make a smaller "brief plot summary" to satisfy others. -- kosboot (talk) 12:34, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What about pointing out some differences when it was filmed, not the least of which was to drop the obvious ethnic-baiting names. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 11:44, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was planning to do that under a separate section, something like "differences between musical and film." -- kosboot (talk) 12:22, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, in the film, the only time Chico is referred to by name is when Hennessey first encounters them, and I believe he refers to Chico as "Willie the Wop." I'll have to check. In the script, he's always referred to as "Chico" (i.e. the unspoken directions). -- kosboot (talk) 14:02, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The detailed plotline, to my mind, is excellent information. If someone makes you trim it, at least it will be in the history for reference. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 12:51, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Most editors frown on the brief summary -- don't ask me why. A couple of things:

  • We don't need the setting of each scene
  • Don't say "then they sang 'Blue Hawaii'". We know it's a musical; we know they're singing. Again, check the article structure for suggestions on how to handle that.
  • The productions section should be more than a list. Say something about the productions -- who was involved, what happened, etc.

The way this stands, the article is, for the most part, simply a collection of bulletted lists. It's a good start, but it needs a lot of work. —  MusicMaker5376 14:38, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of songs?[edit]

I've combined some information to delistify the article and added more background and introductory information. Have there been any major productions since 1927? Also, I don't think we need the lists of published songs. I suggest deleting that, although I did not take the knife to it myself. Thanks for splitting this article off from the film article. It was obviously needed. You also need to go through the links and make sure that the actors, etc. link to the musical article as well as (or instead of) the film article. -- Ssilvers (talk) 14:58, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I added the list of songs since some of the music for the songs are lost (e.g. the Bellhops), and some of them are totally unpublished. If people want to know how to get a hold of a particular song, this list can help them. -- kosboot (talk) 15:03, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If they're unpublished, this list won't help them. Furthermore, we're not trying to help people find music, we're an encyclopedia. The list is unencyclopedic and will be cut. —  MusicMaker5376 15:25, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, but I put the footnote in. Please fix the footnote if it is not quite right. -- Ssilvers (talk) 15:33, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Can you explain what makes a list unencyclopedic? -- kosboot (talk) 15:59, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image[edit]

I have an image for the cover of the sheet music. I think this is permissible, the music is the thing that's copyrighted, not the image. But I've never uploaded to Wikipedia. Would someone else like to try? -- kosboot (talk) 15:11, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The image is also under copyright, but it can be done through fair use. Learn by doing, my friend! If anything needs to be fixed, we'll fix it. —  MusicMaker5376 15:22, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know why the image doesn't show up - if anyone can help it'll be appreciated. And if you can strengthen my fair use argument, by all means do so. It's here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Cocoanuts-Bungalow_sheet_music_cover.jpg#file -- kosboot (talk) 04:15, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed the infobox so that the image shows up. Your scan might be considered too big, though (not "low resolution" enough). The fact that it's used in a small size in the article itself might not be the deciding factor. We'll see. Good job uploading your first image!! -- Ssilvers (talk) 04:39, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Plot again[edit]

I went through the plot and tried to put the language into our usual style. For example, I tried to elimiate constructions like: He sings A Little Bungalow. Instead, it should be something like: He tells her about "A Little Bungalow". Please go through it, and make sure I didn't make something wrong or more confusing. Thanks! -- Ssilvers (talk) 05:27, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article improvement[edit]

The next thing the article needs is a background/history section about how the show came to be written and produced, with citations to published sources, including page numbers, if possible. Another section that is missing is a critical reaction section summarizing what the critics wrote about the original production and giving citations to the reviews. The article is really coming along, though. Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 05:27, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Regional performances[edit]

I think most regional performances do not rise to the level of notability and thus do not merit mention in the article - but I'll let someone else delete & argue. - kosboot (talk) 19:33, 17 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
