Different versions of script[edit]

Posting this as a heads up for anyone who might want to add/update plot details in the future: there is more than one version of the script. I've recently obtained a reprint of a version first published in 1932, and it differs in a number of ways from the 1945 version that can be accessed online via the University of Pittsburgh. It looks like Rinehart updated the play to reflect the era. In the 1945 version, a "Jap" servant is changed to a "Negro", presumably due to the US being at war with Japan at the time; he is given a new name and his dialog is modified to reflect (stereotypes of) his revised ethnicity. A story about the Bat is announced on radio rather than read from a newspaper. Etc. I'm adding the plot according to the earlier version, which is presumably what audiences saw in the 1920s and 30s when the play was most popular. --RL0919 (talk) 20:03, 9 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
