Untitled[edit]

    • Comment by Matumit Sombunjaroen, "Khun" is actually used on both men and women, with roughly the same meaning as Japanese`s "-san". "Khunying" is generally use on Women with high social standing. Officially it is a title given by the royal family to selected fews each year. "Than Puu Ying" is a higher title than "Khun Ying" and is the highest obtainable by modern day`s Thai women.

Thai surname[edit]

1. Some people with same Thai surname may spell their surname in English as same or not.
Some people with same Thai given name may spell their name in English as same or not.

Example my surname, ไกรราช.

  • Royal Thai General System of Transcription: Krairat
  • Krairach
  • Krirach
  • Krairaj
  • Krirarch (my old spelling)
  • Grairard (my new spelling, for easier reading (I think), but did not change my Thai surname ไกรราช) (My spelling "Grairard" is not using Royal Thai General System of Transcription)
  • ... etc.

Example same notable person with same Thai name but not same English spelling

  • General (Ret.) Sonthi Boonyaratglin (Thai: สนธิ บุญยรัตกลิน)
  • Sondhi Limthongkul (Thai: สนธิ ลิ้มทองกุล)

2. Some Thai (short) surnames are also occurs as a first name or given name. Example: ไกรราช and ไกรลาศ (not same meanings, I think) are surnames. They also occurs as a male first name. Some Thai man named ไกรราช or ไกรลาศ (given name, not surname).

3. Can't translate Thai surname when it is wrote in English and don't know how to spell it in Thai. Thai surnames that wrote in Thai can translate by person who know Thai language, or some Thai surnames are wrote in Thai but the word(s) are not Thai language (Pali, Sanskrit, Lao, Khmer, Chinese, other related Tai languages, or another language(s), or fictional words (I found))

4. Some Thai surnames are including place(s) or something(s) that surname users may known. Example, in a webboard, Thaibangouy (ไถ้บ้านกวย) (reading taibanguay), Ban Gouy or บ้านกวย is a place.

Some Thai surnames are including "Thai", Thai may means Thailand or Thai if spelling ไทย, but some surnames included Thai but not mean Thai or Thailand because same sound as Thai but not spell ไทย, use another Thai spell. Example: The name of Sukhothai Province include "thai" but สุโขทัย. Notable examples include Teerathep Winothai (ธีรเทพ วิโนทัย).

Some Thai surnames include Chinese surname, because of Thai Chinese or Chinese ethnicity. Notable of them are include Sondhi Limthongkul (traditional Chinese: 林明達; pinyin: Lin Mingda). More example: Some Thai surnames are start with "Sae" (แซ่, means Chinese surname) and end with its original Chinese surname.

In the same village or district, some surnames are share similarities. It is notable in Phutthaisong and nearby districts, there are many surnames with -thaisong suffix. Confusion[edit]

""Khun" pronouced with an even tone should be confused with rising-tone Khun, an obsolete feudal title, or ever replaced with "Khunying," comparable to formal Lady in western culture, that may still be awarded to a woman." Should it be confused? Or is there a 'not' missing? (There definitely should be another 'n' in 'pronouced'.) Peridon (talk) 20:37, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

See Thai_royal_and_noble_titles#Khun_.28courtesy_title.29 and Sirikitiya Jensen Note 1. --Pawyilee (talk) 11:49, 24 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that - it's that I think there should be a 'not' in 'should be confused'... Peridon (talk) 13:59, 24 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
