May tournament[edit]

No, that would only give him 30 wins over three tournaments - normally 33 is the minimum. He would need at least 12-3 I think ,and probably have to be in contention for the yusho again.--Pawnkingthree (talk) 12:06, 23 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Kinboshi?[edit]

Hi, I don't know how that slipped in there but you are correct, Sanyaku don't get kinboshi. Champion in eighth tournament[edit]

I'm wondering how rare winning a major so quicky actually is. Looking back through the records of yokozuna on WP, I haven't found a quicker rise to the top since Sadanoyama Shinmatsu in 1961. Tigerboy1966 11:59, 25 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The TV was saying Asashoryu and Takanohana II had beat Terunofuji by one tournament (25 to his 26 tournaments) to take a makuuchi yusho. However, they said nothing about lowest number of tournaments in makuuchi itself, which now that you mention it is a more interesting statistic. FourTildes (talk) 12:25, 25 May 2015 (UTC). Although of course he was permitted to enter sumo in the third highest makushita division because of his amateur achievements so he isn't really comparable to Asa and Taka who had to start at the very bottom. Another little point which could go in if a source mentions it: I think he's a rare example of an ōzeki who never competed at komusubi. As above his predecessor seems to be Sadanoyama, but you may know of a more recent example. Tigerboy1966 08:24, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Date of professional debut[edit]

Should we treat his professional career as beginning in January 2011 or May 2011? He has a maezumo entry for January but Sumo Reference shows he did not fight any matches. Then we have the cancelled March 2011 tournament, and then he has a second maezumo listing in May, and actually gets on the dohyo and has two wins. I believe this is a rule that foreign recruits now have to delay their debuts by one basho. But isn't this effectively the beginning of his career? It wouldn't matter too much except that it affects his "fastest from pro debut to makuuchi yusho" stat. In the intro it says that it took him 24 tournaments, but that appears to be counting from his debut in jonokuchi, which is incorrect. It should be 25 or 26, depending on whether one or both maezumo are included (as mentioned in the previous section of this talk page.)--Pawnkingthree (talk) 15:16, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
