Removed external link

I've removed (twice now) someone's posting of an exlink to a photo of Tera Patrick. Please don't be upset. There's nothing very wrong with the picture per se (it'd be rather prurient of me to censor a nude image of a pornstar, who is after all famous for being nude). But per wikipedia policy, wikipedia isn't a link farm or a web directory. We already provide links to two "official" Tera Patrick sites, which both contain tons of nude images. It's not like finding photos of her is at all difficult - a google for "tera patrick nude" [1] finds around 188,000 hits. If someone could provide a legal photo of her (by which I mean one they own copyright to, or have a release from the copyright owner) then that would make for a great addition. This is quite possible - lots of people go to Adult Industry tradeshows and take photos with the models there (during the autograph-signing sessions). Thanks. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 22:23, 12 Jun 2004 (UTC)

External links (notes)

On removing the (obvious copyvio)photo, Infrogmation also removed the AVN link (I expect because the new spam filter didn't like it). I was going to restore it (not a very hard to beat spam filter, it is) but the site is currently defaced. I'll wait until it's fixed. Also, I'll add (later) a link to www.asianlovepalace.com, which appears to be a new model agency run by (or maybe just fronted by) Tera Patrick. It just has a "coming soon" page now, so there's no point in linking to it yet. -- Middenface 21:01, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC)

AVN is okay again, so I restored the AVN story link. -- Middenface 02:10, 22 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Natural or not?

There have been several edits over the past week or two about Tera's natural bust (or lack thereof). If no one can provide evidence either way (and for anything regarding porn stars, evidence is usually very scarce), it should just be left blank. -EdgarAllanToe 11:59, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

Mr. Web Review has a blurb about her implants from June 2003. Olessi 21:30, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

Quotes section

Currently the Quotes section includes: >>On her likes and dislikes: "I like bad men, good men, all men but especially confident men. I'm not very fond of bad hygiene, dirty shoes and small penises."<<

Template:Female porn biography lists:

You really shouldn't add "turn ons" and "turn offs" in the section, nor other things that can be considered unbecoming of an encyclopedia.
For instance, the following are encyclopedic:

* names of children and spouses, as well as date(s) of marriage and the names of the spouse;
* quotes from famous person(s) regarding the individual the article is focused on;
* items reported in the news outlets are considered encyclopedic, tabloids and gossip publications are not be considered bona-fide news sources.

And, logically, the following are not considered encyclopedic and should be excised from any self-respecting encyclopedia article:

* names of animals;
* favorite colors, foods, etc;
* personal dislikes, such as "stinky men", "obnoxious drivers", etc;
* lists of sexual partners, unless truly notable and otherwise newsworthy.

Based on that criteria I would support removing the quote. Olessi 07:44, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

Where did this stuff come from?

What source provided this information, seeing as I cannot get any via Google. Obviously, other sources may exist that have not hit the nets yet, so I'm looking for sources for the stuff I've bolded in the following snippet.

Her father , from Kent, England ,is English/Jewish while her mother was born in Thailand, resulting in her exotic physical appearance. She lived for a while in London.

Right now, I've reverted to the original text, and hope that information becomes available to support the above bolded info. -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. Think out loud 02:14, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

I didn't realize that being half Thai results in an exotic physical appearance. Perhaps it should be a little more unbiased? User:66.27.16.55, 04:45, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

It doesn't, necessarily. But in Tera's case, it does... a very striking Western/Asian blend. You think otherwise? Wahkeenah 05:15, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

OMFG I completely agree, how can anyone not say this bee-yatch is totally exotic! Come on, there must be two dozen reviews of her flicks that say exactly that - everyone knows mixed-race people have a usually exotic look because they don't match up with all the features of any one of their ancestry, so put that in the article. Brjatlick 01:34, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
The problem with the word "exotic" is that it's entirely subjective to the viewer. It's like if you go to Thailand, you think of the local cuisine as "Thai food". But to the Thai, it's just "food". Tera Patrick has Thai features, but not everyone finds that exotic (or necessarily beautiful). For the record, I don't think her "blend" is even that pronounced. From some angles (like in the picture in the article) she could pass for full Thai. I think this is more a case of viewers having Asian fetish than anything else.24.6.99.30 23:47, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

More on ethnicity

discussion originally on User talk:Finlay McWalter, moved here for more public visibility

I haven't the vaguest idea whether Tera Patrick's birth name is Linda Hopkins, Linda Shapiro, or Linda Hopkins Shapiro. The Internet gives typically copycat and contradictory information (pardon the dubious usage of that last word). It makes a big difference, because Shapiro is a decidedly Jewish name, whereas Hopkins is an English-sounding name. It seems like someone needs to do some actual primary source research and figure out what her actual biographical info is. Wahkeenah 21:24, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

I agree entirely. The most common one seems to be LHS; the trouble with that is that both are surnames, and it's quite possible that (as a child) her mother remarried (either to Mr Hopkins or Mr Shapiro) and renamed little Linda accordingly. Or Hopkins could just be a middle name. Or Mr Shapiro could be english and jewish :) We just don't know, and as you say the internet doesn't reach a consensus. As to our doing primary research, I don't really know how anyone could do that (bar some fairly stalkerish detective work), as she and her associated companies are very unlikely to tell us (she works under a pseudonym for good reason). I must confess that I'm increasingly uneasy with Wikipedia's mania for classifying everyone's race and ethnicity. Perhaps we should just say she's of European and Thai heritage. I suggest we leave her name as LHS, as that does seem to be the most common meme. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 21:57, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
Ah, I've had a brainwave. She and Digital Playground sued each other, and her real name probably appear on court documents. And a court document is a public source, so we can use it for reference without being accused of disclosing secret private info by underhand means. Here's a story about an interim settlement in the case [2]. So from that we know it's Judge Stephen D. Petersen. Google shows him as sitting on the bench of the Superior Court for Los Angeles County. The link also names the case: Digital Playground v. Tera Patrick. There are some wikipedians, such as those at college, who have access to Lexis-Nexus and can look up legal citations. I think we have enough to allow a meaningful search:
  • case: Digital Playground v. Tera Patrick
  • venue: Superior Court for Los Angeles County, Judge Stephen D. Petersen presiding
  • judgement: preliminary injunction June 10 2003
I don't think that this will really solve our English/Jewish problem, as it only will yield her current name, and (as I noted above) that's not really enough to definatively resolve her ethnicity. But at least we'll know her name. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 22:10, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
And you are right that some wiki writers seem obsessed, especially with identifying celebrities as being Jewish, whereas I don't see a lot of articles talking about "so-and-so, a Presbyterian actor", or whatever. It vaguely smacks of the Nazis painting "Jude" on shopkeepers' windows. Take the wrangling over Barbara Walters, for example. Unless someone's being Jewish has something to do with something, it's incidental, and otherwise it's obvious and redundant anyway. It's like saying, "Myron Cohen, a Jewish comedian..." Duh! Note that in other articles, it doesn't say, "Richard Pryor, a black comedian" or "Jeff Foxworthy, a Redneck comedian..." Wahkeenah 22:41, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
Well, you're going by religion, but Jewish is certainly an ethnicity and most Wikipedia articles do state the ethnicity of whichever celebritiy, if the celebrity is famous enough. Yes, it is mentioned that Walters is Jewish, but it is also mentioned that, say, Soledad O'Brien is Irish and Afro-Cuban. Moving on:

There are plenty of sources that say her father is Jewish. And obviously, Shapiro is a Jewish last name. Anyway, I think "English" is just used to indicate that he's caucasian, I doubt he's from England.

Sources: http://www.amiannoyingornot.com/(15wm5245bxirpf55u3tsyf55)/view.aspx?id=3625&collection=549 - says Patrick visited the site and checked out her entry, specifies "Born in Montana of Jewish/Asian decent" NNDB - www.nndb.com/people/785/000103476/ - says "Jewish" for her father This site says - "I listened to her interview with Bob Berkowitz on Eyada.com and just read her interview with Roger Pipe and she's a smart, disciplined courteous person (just what you'd expect from someone who's half Asian and half Jewish) who gives porn a good name. Here are some highlights from her Rog Pipe interview." www.lukeisback.com/stars/stars/tera_patrick.htm

Vulturell 03:12, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

  • And other Internet sources contradict it. And when I hear "English" I think "British", not "English-speaking". I'm not convinced the info out there is reliable. I also don't care all that much, I just find this discussion interesting. :) Wahkeenah 04:30, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
I find this discussion interesting, too. Yeah, the sources aren't great, and this is often the case for a lot of porn stars and porn star bios. But if her last name really is "Shapiro" I would assume those sources to be correct. I think "English" could mean something along the lines of "Anglo". I saw a similar thing with Halle Berry, who is described in many sources as having an "English" mother, making it seem like her mother is from England - but she was born in the U.S. of mixed (caucasian) ancestry. As for Patrick, I also saw a bio that descibred her as 1/4 Dutch and 1/4 English - but again, this doesn't necessarily mean that her English and Dutch ancestors weren't Jewish (if they were really named Shapiro) - I've seen similar situations where Jewish celebrities' ancestries were described as the various nationalities, without specifying "Jewish" - i.e. Joaquin Phoenix's (Jewish) mother as "Hungarian"-"Russian" (because of course his Jewish grandparents came from Hungary and Russia, respectively) or Scarlett Johansson's Jewish mother as "Polish" - which is misleading and incorrect because her mother was obviously not even born in Poland, but is just an NY-born woman who has Polish Jewish ancestors. So even if someone describes her father as "English" - it could mean a dozen things, from him being Jewish and born in England, to him being born in the U.S. of English Jewish parents, to him being just English, to him being half English and half Jewish and so on. Anyway, I hope you find that interesting, too. It's just something I've noticed in these quickie trivia bits that mostly stem from the IMDB and get copied around the net. Sometimes they are misleading, one way or the other. Vulturell 06:38, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
What I find kind of weird is when they say stuff like "Fran Drescher is a Jewish actress". No, she's an AMERICAN actress. In the next paragraph, when they start talking about parents, then it's fair game, perhaps, to say "Her parents are Jewish". Meanwhile, re-checking the current Tera Patrick article, it follows pretty much those lines, so I reckon I can't quarrel with it, just maybe with the facts, since it's kind of unclear just what the facts are. It's odd she has a middle name of Hopkins. There was a 1920s-1930s actress named Peggy Hopkins Joyce... seemingly a first name for a last name, and a last name for a middle name. However, she was married 6 times, and retained the surnames of husbands 2 and 3, but not the others. Go figure. Wahkeenah 07:19, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
I used to do that, actually. Put in the ethnicity in the first sentence (i.e. Owen Wilson an "Irish-American actor". But I learned my lesson and I go around fixing stuff like that. I think I actually removed "Jewish American" from Fran Drescher's description and put it in to the section about her parents (her article also had the irraneous information that she was part Italian - this is a common web rumour, I think also from the IMDB, but she was asked and clarified in one interview that she was nothing but Russian Jewish). "Hopkins" is an unusual last name for someone who is Jewish and Thai. I would imagine it being given to a child because it was a grandparent's last name or something. But I think the most reliable source for Patrick would have to be the "Am I Annoying" link I gave you. She visited this site and gave them a list her own "Annoying" list. I'm sure if her entry there (which says she's Jewish and Asian) was erreneous she would have corrected it, but I dunno. Vulturell 10:11, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

I spoke with Tera at Glamourcon in 2007 in Los Angeles. She stated that her father was not Jewish, but, in reference to husband Evan Seinfeld, that she was "Jewish by injection only".User:LaughingLion 23:47, 14 October 2007 23:47, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

"Exotic, striking appearance"

"Patrick was born in Great Falls, Montana to a Jewish father and Thai mother, resulting in her exotic, striking physical appearance."

How do we objectively quantify "exoticness" or "strikingness"? Is this true encyclopedic information, or mere subjective opinion? I'm going to remove this statement, however I see that User:Wahkeenah has already reinstated it after being removed earlier (since "being Half Thai doesn't necessarily result in an exotic appearance, but in this case it does" - paraphrased, see earlier discussion topic), so I wouldn't be too surprised to see it pop back up in a few days time. --CrypticBacon 23:04, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Quotes

The quotes should really go to Wikiquote. Anyone else second this? -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. Think out loud 20:35, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Since no one has really responded, or seems interested, I'm going to go ahead and move the numerous quotes to Wikiquote. The page will be on Tera's page at Wikiquote. -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. Think out loudWP:PORN BIO? 15:04, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

"Factoids"

I've also taken the liberty of removing the factoids section from the article as they are completely unencyclopedic. So, to the person or persons who added them, please refer to the manual of style for biographies. Thanks! -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. Think out loudWP:PORN BIO? 15:10, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm taking out the line: "It would appear she is a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in the State of California, as an RN certification normally requires a four year degree." as it is COMPLETELY FALSE. An associates is the minimum for a nurse to be an RN in California. Unless, it is documented otherwise, I don't see that Tera is a nurse in CA and, if she is, whether she is an RN or LVN. Completely irrelevent. - Bob

I think that if she were an RN or LPN that it would be noteworthy. The part that bothers me most is the "It would appear..." If we can't say for certain, then it shouldn't be in the article. Dismas|(talk) 08:32, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

AGAIN, I'm removing "It would appear she is a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in the State of California, as an RN certification normally requires a four year degree."

  1. 1.) 'It Appears' is an opinion. A false opinion in this case.
  2. 2.) YOU DO NOT NEED A 4 YEAR DEGREE TO BE A RN IN CALIFORNIA. An AA is fine. I don't think whoever is adding this line UNDERSTANDS anything about NURSING, so they should not put in their own speculations/opinions in this matter.

- Bob

"Scenes with Men"

Why isn't there anything about how she won't do boy/girl scenes anymore except with her husband. In an interview I read, she stated that she had a "bad" experience with a male porn star she was working with and it turned her off to doing scenes with men. I don't think that she doesn't do boy/girl scenes anymore because she is married as her husband bangs chicks in their movies. Anyone have any idea why?

to be jewish

I see that tere is a page related to "Jewish actors" and Jewish models". Although being jewish is considered an ethicity by many people, it is not so. To be jewish is like to be christian, or islamic. It's a matter of religionship, not of ethic group. We have many websites cataloguing people by religion (more specifically, "to be jewish", as you can see in jewwatch.com). Please consider that to be jewish is like sayng that you're of a different religion and not that you are caucasic, or indo-european, et caetera.

82.59.66.132 10:39, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Not quite. It can be both or either. See our articles on Jew or Who is a Jew?. AnonEMouse (squeak) 13:57, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

I, as a jew, am also indo-european. The boundary between "jewishness" taken as ethnicity it's very close to racism. I lived it all on my very skin. I am contrary to racism-because-you-are -jewish, and the thin line from being discriminated for it *it is* racism. Please don't be (all of us) revisionist. By the way, the page you linked in your answer, don't define jewishness at all, neither its probably the racialness of the fact.

87.7.121.77 15:45, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you mean. Jew, first sentences define the term: "Jews (Hebrew: יְהוּדִים, Yehudim; Yiddish: ייִדן, Yidn) are followers of Judaism or, more generally, members of the Jewish people (also known as the Jewish nation, or the Children of Israel), an ethno-religious group descended from the ancient Israelites and from converts who joined their religion. The term also includes those who have undergone an officially recognized formal process of religious conversion to Judaism." Who is a Jew? similarly:

"...Judaism shares some of the characteristics of an ethnicity and a religion..." AnonEMouse (squeak) 20:36, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

I can't convince you, you don't convince me. What else if not saying "...as you like it"? This discussion is going nowhere.

87.6.122.177 15:39, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

This is a very weird argument for this page. But, I want to point out that while the Soviet Union was by law forcibly secular, as in NO RELIGION anywhere, The Soviet government printed "Jewish" on Soviet passports of jewish citizens. It's a very contentious debate to be sure. Dachande (talk) 22:52, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Thumb difference?

Ok, so how is it that the thumbnail shown for the image down in the 'External links' section is different than the image it links to? Valrith 21:02, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Hmm... good question. My intent was to link to the image that you click through... never noticed that the thumbnail is different. Tabercil 21:37, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
I asked the question at the Help Desk (see here) and the feedback there as well as the bug report here indicates that there was an earlier picture with the same name which got removed. However, the thumbnail pic of the deleted image at 150px is still in the cache somewhere. When I changed it to 151, it worked. Tabercil 22:41, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
