Article title[edit]
Shouldn't this article be titled Tabasco (burlesque opera)? Burlesque Opera of Tabasco is a re-naming of the work more than a century after it premiered and was not the title used by the work's creators who titled it simply Tabasco with an added description "burlesque opera in two acts". (see original published score) It is a conceit of the New Orleans Opera from there 2016 revival; possibly done because of trademark issues with the maker of tabasco sauce.4meter4 (talk) 03:16, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- Surely WP:COMMONNAME applies? If the majority of decently recent reliable sources use the new title, we should probably follow when naming the article, regardless of the author’s intent. - Keriluamox I disagree. No published academic reference works use the new title. They all use the old one. The only sources using the new title are about the New Orleans Opera production, and involve interviews with the people from that production. To my mind they lack appropriate distance from the subject, as the NOA had a promotional agenda in their rebranding of the opera at the time those sources were written. We need scholarly sources supporting the retitling; and there are none. Further, the New Orleans Opera production isn’t well known and their titling doesn’t reflect the scholarship on this opera. So frankly I would argue that “Tabasco” is the better known common name. 4meter4 (talk) 21:47, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

- @Ssilvers and Keriluamox I've moved the title and updated the lead. In researching further discovered I was in error that scholarly sources don't use the term Burlesque Opera of Tabasco. I was looking at Broadway source books and works covering the Boston premiere when I made that claim, and it's certainly true those sources don't use that title because those original first productions used the name Tabasco. Apparently sometime after the Broadway run, Seabrooke (who starred in the show on Broadway and had bought the right of performance from the show's creators), retitled the work Burlesque Opera of Tabasco during the national tour. When the New Orleans Opera revived the work they chose to use this adapted name; although the 1894 published score uses the original title. I still think Tabasco (burlesque opera) is the better title as it reflects the Broadway source material and the premieres of the original and Seabrooke versions as well as the published score. But I do think a bolded mention of the other title is warranted in the lead section. I'll work on fleshing out the performance history section accordingly.
