Title suggestions[edit]

We will quite likely have to wait a few weeks or more to see if the mainstream media give a common title to this event. Until then, we need a descriptive title. I removed "counter-" from the title, because it's more than just fighting back, it appears to be an advance threatening Addis Ababa. Please add title suggestions and arguments for/against to see if there's an alternative title likely to achieve consensus. I didn't put 2021, since there doesn't appear to have been a prior joint offensive by the two military groups. Boud (talk) 22:31, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have been following the titles you guys have been assigning and the debates/talks you have, trying to be careful so that you have the best title that servs the purpose. In my view, there are important things to consider in the current conflict in Ethiopia. First, both sides are trying to take the narrative to their side in many ways, including affecting the main stream media. It is important to understand Wikipedia is a target too. So, they will feed you with their own side of the story. It is good to give appropriate credit to the stories in both sides. For example, The "Tigray War" Wikipedia page is full of one-side stories (The TPLF side). Second, titles are very important and many people only see the titles. It is important to be considerate of the claims of both sides in choosing the title. For example, I like that "counter" is excluded for the reasons you mentioned. What I would like to add is the "Rebels" is what is mostly used to describe them as opposed to TDF. TDF was a deliberate term created from the TPLF side to picture themselves as Tigray Forces and not just TPLF party. TDF also sounds as one's nation defense force, but Tigray is not a nation (it is a region within a nation). Anyway, considerable medial outlets use TDF too. But I believe the "Rebels" has become more common, we may probably use "Rebels: TDF...". The word "Rebels" is also familiar for many, so it is kind of close to home. Third, OLA and TDF are not the same in size capacity and active participation. It is the case that TPLF wanted to gather different forces, again to create an international narrative, that it is not only TPLF fighting Ethiopian government but also others. So, putting TDF-OLA offensive as a title is falling for TPLF trap and by doing so you are contributing to TPLF's narrative creation. This offends the other side. It is true that OLA announced that it is working with TPLF, but taking only that and presenting as if both are equally fighting is misleading. There were other nine parties that signed an agreement in DC against the government. Having TDF-OLA would raise the question that why wouldn't you include the other seven. So, "Rebels" would describe them all. Again, there are reports showing the individuals that appeared on the rebels agreement meeting in DC are not real representatives of people in Ethiopia. I mean, it is part of TPLFs effort to create that narrative that it is not only TPLF fighting. But on the ground it is largely TPLF, and OLA is just sounding an agreement. Degolo, Mehel Meda, Shewa Robit[edit]

Do we have any acceptable sources for the info currently only on Twitter? It seems to be generally accepted - but not yet RSed - that the TDF now controls Degolo and Mehal Meda, and the TDF–OLA jointly control Shewa Robit. Boud (talk) 15:34, 21 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
