@Edison: - Hi Edison. Thanks for chiming in! WP:ONEEVENT is rule governing when we should or should not create biography articles. Theoretically, this article is about an event (i.e. a notable suicide) and not about a person. I think you're right that having an article dedicated to the person (i.e. Joe Gliniewicz) would be wrong under WP:ONEEVENT rules. NickCT (talk) 14:41, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

An article like this is supposed to be about the one event that got the person news coverage, but it also inevitably includes a biography. There may be numerous news stories, but breaking news coverage stories are not "high quality" for the purposes of creating Wikipedia articles. See Wikipedia:Identifying and using primary and secondary sources.The sources are generally not secondary sources; they are mostly primary sources in the form of breaking news stories giving the latest details of an unfolding event. In time there may be reliable secondary sources analyzing this subject. WP:BLP1E and WP:NOTNEWS might apply here, if someone had simply engaged in financial hanky-panky and committed suicide to avoid the ignominy of being found out. Maybe the person or the suicide will turn out to be notable if there are enduring effects on society, like reforms to guard against long-term diversion of funds provided for police youth programs, or requirements for more transparency in death investigations, or if more crimes are exposed, or if people he sent to prison get new trials. @Edison: - I get what you're saying, and partially agree. But having participated in a lot of AfD discussions, I think the fact is that any event like this that receives a high degree of coverage in mainstream media (even when that coverage is technically primary) will probably be considered notable. I don't understand your post. That link you posted indicates that the article was titled "Charles" (not "Joseph") and was then changed to "Joe". Army rank?[edit]

Was he actually a US Army lieutenant? 26 years as an NCO works well to make him an E-8 NCO, but was he actually commissioned in the Army or Army Reserve? Probably not, and the news article lists him as a police lieutenant. – S. Rich (talk) 18:13, 25 February 2022 (UTC) The CNN source lists him as an NCO. E-8's can be Master Sergeants or First Sergeants, so posting a rank insignia in the infobox is not appropriate until we know exactly what rank he achieved. 18:26, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding is that he was a police lieutenant, but left the Army as a First Sergeant. Per his personnel file, on pages 22-23, he joined the Army proper in 1980, completed active duty in '84 and was assigned to the Reserves. In 2007 he transferred to US Army Retired Reserve; the two previous promotions were both in 2004 to Master Sergeant and 1st Sergeant, respectively. 1SG is the last Army promotion listed, so I would conclude that it was his final rank.
Now, it's also my understanding that the document I linked counts as a primary source, so it's not ideal, but I did find this from ABC 7, this issue of Illinois Cops, and this from Reuters supporting the 1SG rank.
