A caution to all who would submit personal photos of Mauna Kea[edit]

Wikimedia and Wikipedia require that photos be available for all uses, including commercial use. The University of Hawaii system prohibits photos taken within the Mauna Kea Science Area Reserve from being used commercially or released for commercial use unless a commercial film/photography permit was acquired before the photos were taken. In addition, if photos include any observatory buildings, permission for commercial use must be acquired from each observatory shown.

While it is unlikely that the University has the time or interest to do anything about posting of "unauthorized" photos to Wikipedia, this apparently irreconcilable conflict between its policy and that of Wikimedia and Wikipedia is something Wikipedians should be aware of when considering submitting their personal photos of Mauna Kea.

I've worked on Mauna Kea for five years, most of it for the University of Hawaii, so I'm very familiar with their policies. I've never once gotten a permit for commercial photography, and as a result, I can't submit to Wikipedia any of the thousands of photos I have of the observatories.

I will encourage the appropriate people at each observatory to officially make photos available to Wikimedia/Wikipedia.

http://www.naoj.org/Observing/Telescope/Parameters/ says 19°49′43″N 155°28′50″W / 19.82861°N 155.48056°W / 19.82861; -155.48056 with no mention of geodetic system.

http://www.nao.ac.jp/introduction/ichi.html says 19°49′42.6″N 155°28′48.8″W / 19.828500°N 155.480222°W / 19.828500; -155.480222 with no mention of geodetic system.

The third "Ichi" link above no longer appears to work, but I work at Subaru Telescope and can confirm that the same coordinates appear in printed (Japanese-language) specifications dating back to the construction of the telescope. Lots of mapping or GIS programs and sites have weird coordinates for places on the Island of Hawaii, it seems.

Thanks for your attention. I found it is now at http://www.nao.ac.jp/about/ichi.html and says 19°49′32″N 155°28′34″W / 19.82556°N 155.47611°W / 19.82556; -155.47611 in NAD83 system, identical to the first one. —Fukumoto (talk) 12:28, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just another observation (after eleven+ years): most of the official web pages seem to have been updated to the above value in NAD83, though still some inconsistencies (or typos?):

SCExAO[edit]

If anyone with more knowledge of the Subaru Telescope knows if the SCExAO (extreme adaptive optics) is actually an active program or an actual realized capability, some mention should be added to the article. Rwessel (talk) 08:24, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
