Date of birth[edit]

Was Marriott not born 30 January 1945, rather than in 1947 ?

Date and place of birth[edit]

The online refs I've looked at go with the 1947 date. A recent edit moved his place of birth from Bow -> Upton, London (in Bexleyheath), reputedly in East Ham memorial hospital. Since EHMH was in Manor Park, I reverted. In trying to find a definitive place of birth for Marriott, I have seen it recorded as 'Stepney', 'Bow', and now East Ham. Perhaps this article would be improved with more (dare I say it) references. Even very basic details seem unverifiable (on the internet) - most sources prevaricate with 'East London'. That'd be the biography by Paulo Hewitt & John Hellier, then; he certainly lived in Strone Road, Manor Park later, but the Newham people list insists Bow, and East London History insists he was born in Stepney. Curious, what's the page number then? Kbthompson 18:03, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Yes the Paulo Hewitt & John Hellier biography, page 30 cites Steve Marriotts mother (Kay) going into labour and getting an ambulance to East Ham Memorial Hospital (Manor Park E12). They were living at 302 Strone Road, the hospital is about 15 minute walk away. I used to live in Strone Road so I know. I am a big Steve Marriott fan, so any questions, please let me know. Steve Marriott never lived in Bow, Kenney Jones the drummer lived in Stepney, maybe thats where the confusion lies? Thanks. S. Thanks for the clarification. I thought that was his granddad's house, his parents (according to a number of reputable sources) lived in Stepney. So, that made both Bow and Stepney more likely to me, thanks for looking it up. I added the ref to the page, it would be good if other 'stated facts' could also be ref'd. The hospital was obviously situated at the intersection of Plashet Grove and Shrewsbury Road, where you can easily pick it out on www.openstreetmap.org.
If you have a look at the following website:
http://www.newhamstory.com/node/400?size=_original
This clearly states that "East Ham Memorial Hospital was built on an adjoining site after the First World War", i.e. adjoining Passmore Edwards Cottage Hospital in Plashet Grove.
This website gives the address as "Shrewsbury Road, Plashet, E7 8QR" (http://ezitis.myzen.co.uk/easthammemorial.html).
But I think both Forest Gate and Manor Park aren't the best option, because I reckon they reflect the current situation or the situation when Greater London was created in 1965 (when Marriott was nearly 20).
References contained in a biography or autobiography might also be simply wrong, or reflect the state after the creation of Greater London (when these books will have been written or edited).
I reckon the best bet would be to replace "Manor Park" with "East Ham" and link to County Borough of East Ham, in which the hospital was definitely situated (http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=42743).
The boundaries of city districts tend to change. I doubt whether it is possible to pin down the exact affiliation of the hospital in 1947 (Manor Park, Upton Park, Forest Gate, East Ham... E6, E7, E12...). The hospital more or less lies at the intersection of all these districts. A slight change of boundary could have placed it in another district.
I would go for "East Ham" and County Borough of East Ham. People mostly try to be very historically accurate in talking about people's birth place in Wikipedia today (e.g. not saying someone was born in Germany in 1774, because Germany didn't exist at the time). You'll see that the hospital is in E7 today just on E6's northern border (it's probably situated where it says "Health"). The border with E12 (Manor Park) runs right through the park opposite the hospital.
Looking at the following table E_postcode_area#List_of_postcode_districts that would leave Forest Gate and Upton Park as the most probable areas, in which the hospital is situated today. Only Forest Gate is in E7. Based on this research, I don't think that Manor Park is correct. Based on the above, Forest Gate (as mentioned in the section "Early years") is correct for the hospital today.
I still think just putting "East Ham" and County Borough of East Ham is the best idea. Confusion may have arisen because Strone Road, Manor Park, juts into E7, and you could easily walk to the hospital from there. Steve Marriott probably simply considered his home turf to be "Manor Park" and the hospital to belong to "his" area. If Marriott lived at 302 Strone Road, and the Jewish cemetery is at 280 Strone Road Manor Park (http://newhamstory.com/forums/index.php?topic=2044.0), then he grew up in Manor Park (E12) according to today's distribution of postcode areas.
But then again, it's partly a historical question really. The internet's resources are limited in that respect. Things may have changed...CarlMosel (talk) 20:36, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can we have some facts please?[edit]

'Eventually, possibly as a result of excessive alcohol and drug use, Marriott started showing signs of mild schizophrenia. He had regularly taken amphetamines (speed) and smoked cannabis in his days in the Moments and Small Faces, and in the latter half of the 1960s he also tried LSD. But towards the end of his Small Faces career and in Humble Pie, Marriott allegedly developed a destructive cocaine and alcohol addiction, which is thought to have been the cause of his marriage breakups and to have contributed to his premature death in a house fire.'

This section is a problem for me. Possibly? Encyclopedias don't use words like possibly surely? There is no proof whatsoever that either alcohol or OTHER drugs can cause schizophrenia, further there is a deliberate juxtaposition of cannabis to this, which has been claimed without any scientific facts to back it up to be linked to schizophrenia; there is no link other than young men who are schizophrenic usually start displaying symptoms after puberty, just the age when experimenting with cannabis. Yes he had drug addictions, but there's no mention here of heroin, the most addictive, which he was definitely using [I can't cite a source but know it from personal experience, I was there, nuff said]. Most likely though cocaine was responsible for his erratic behaviour, tempers and mood swings, all symptoms of cocaine abuse/addiction. The curse of rock stars with loads of money. Also, I was amused by 'in the latter half of the 1960s he also tried LSD' as 'It's all so beautiful' is such an obvious acid song, the whole band were tripping. Also tried? Steve Marriott Clarification of DoB and early home[edit]

Steve was born on 30th January 1947 and in his early childhood lived at 308 Strone Road Manor Park E 12. The Jewish Cemetery was not at 280 Strone Road as this is a private house where I lived and grew up. Steve Marriott also attended Monega Junior Mixed School from 1952 until 1958 when he moved to Sandringham Secondary Modern. He moved from 308 Strone Road to Daines Close Manor Park probably when he was an early teenager.

Brewery address? Comment[edit]

"When doing the gigs, we would pick him up outside the Brewery in Romford road Essex."

Could someone with access to more information please amend this sentence? If the brewery was/is in Romford Road, Essex it's just a capitalisation error, but I suspect it's the Brewery in Romford, Essex. MarpoHarks (talk) 20:12, 30 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Smart Alecs?[edit]

I just saw a clip on YouTube of Marriott playing drums in movie called "Live It Up" with a band named "The Smart Alecs," fronted by Heinz Burt. I don't know enough about it to add it, but it would seem that playing drums with an early band that was featured in a movie would warrant a mention in the article.
