The statue has a predecessor[edit]

London readers may not be aware, but there was a similarly posed statue of Clive erected in Shrewsbury's Market Square in 1860, sculptor Baron Marochetti. This has been subject since the toppling of the Colston statue in Bristol of petitions to both remove it and to retain it in Shrewsbury, which will be debated in a meeting of the Shropshire Council. It would be interesting to find out if it had an influence on the creation of this London statue (I have seen a published account in Shropshire Archives which is currently out of bounds to visitors.) Something might be mentioned on the page 'in passing' or be an idea for a page in its own right.Cloptonson (talk) 17:57, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Should have looked before I leapt. I notice it is already mentioned that Lord Curzon (ex Viceroy of India) knew about the Shrewsbury statue, as he wrote in support of one for London.Cloptonson (talk) 18:04, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
