Fair use rationale for Image:Stagecoach movieposter.jpg[edit]

Image:Stagecoach movieposter.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Stagecoach (1939 film)Stagecoach (film) — This article was moved without discussion, and should be moved back to its original location, as it is clearly the main topic with films for this title. - BilCat (talk) 23:36, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Racism in Stagecoach[edit]

I felt dirty just watching this deeply racist work of art made with utter Hollywood professionalism. Could someone with relevant knowledge of racism in Hollywood contribute a section on the subject (since racism is a defining (im)moral quality of this film? thanx! I feel tainted reading this SJW claptrap. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.72.88.176 (talk) 01:12, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Stagecoach is not particularly racist for the period in which it was made. Such a section would be appropriate only for something far more blatant, for example The Birth of a Nation. Clarityfiend (talk) 04:50, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The film is certainly extremely racist in its depiction of the Native American Indians, whereas earlier westerns like "The Big Trail" (1930) portrayed them much more positively. (86.144.82.212 (talk) 00:56, 19 December 2017 (UTC))[reply]

User is correct in citing the film's racist elements. Since these have been widely discussed in the critical literature, I have added an acknowledgment of this to the text as a starting point for future consideration. Arguably, a separate section could be added to discuss this aspect of the film in more detail. As context, Ford is widely thought to have gradually become more self-aware of the inherent racism in his and other directors' Westerns of the 1930s and 1940s. By the time he made The Searchers in 1956, his outlook seems to have changed substantially, and he depicts racism as a real and very negative part of the Old West. This may also be a matter of debate, but it's a view of the director that has been discussed at length in books and articles. Although one comment above, to the effect that Stagecoach is probably not more racist than other films of the time, is possibly true, the iconic nature of Stagecoach is such that in my opinion, at least some mention of it should be in the text here, especially to alert readers who may not otherwise be familiar with this aspect of film history that it is something that has been observed and debated. This sort of petty, political bickering has no place on Wikipedia. This is a place for factual knowledge. Not a place for people to come advocate for what they like or don't like. This film is a typical product of its time and culture. If you don't like it, you can write about it in your blog. We don't need Wikipedia to be a dumping ground for everyone with an opinion or bone to pick about old films. Peacetype (talk) 10:17, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Budgets vs. Negative Cost[edit]

The listing here of STAGECOACH's budget, which cites Matthew Bernstein's WALTER WANGER: HOLLYWOOD INDEPENDENT, is incorrect. The listed figure ($531,374) is actually the film's negative cost (the ultimate production cost for making the initial cut of the film), not its budget (see Bernstein, 439). Should we change the label?

As to the actual budget, different sources give different amounts, but one of the film's original budgeting documents, held at the Ford Collection in the Lilly Library and dated from after production started, lists an amount of $490,700. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Threepwood89 (talkcontribs) 03:17, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Uncredited voice of singer in cafe/cantina?[edit]

Any idea who sang the song in the cafe? The voice is so like that of Chavela Vargas who would have been about 25 years old in 1939. 2600:8801:B809:2E00:20AB:B6F1:7A18:425D (talk) 01:17, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
