Use of "the planum"[edit]

Regarding the contention that use of the shorthand "the planum" to refer to Sputnik Planum is not "encyclopedic", that would imply that it is also not encyclopedic to make references to "the empire" or "the republic" in a discussion of Ancient Rome, to refer to "the president" in a discussion of Abraham Lincoln, or to refer to "the rings" in a discussion of the Rings of Saturn. It has a name. Using the name is the most precise and accurate language possible. What's silly is to try to avoid to use it. Note: I did not say that it was 'not encyclopedic', just that using the name is more encyclopedic, which is because of the reason I've mentioned. --JorisvS (talk) 21:40, 21 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If you think use of "the planum" is silly, then I suggest you edit an article like Grand Canyon to remove every instance of the usage of "the canyon" (there are about 57 of them) and see how others react. WolfmanSF (talk) 00:47, 23 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
