It was legal for Christian slaves to be sold to Muslims[edit]

Not all of the Christian slaves were taken in raids. Russia permitted Russian and European Christian slaves to be sold in its own cities to Muslims.

NPOV dispute[edit]

The 'modern day slavery' source says 13.5 to 14.5 million Indians are slaves. This is absurd because clearly the definition of slavery used to derive this number, as for the Russian number, cannot what is commonly or publically understood as slavery. I think that this is because it includes sex workers as 'slaves'. That's a political point, but if the numbers are high because sex workers are included this needs to be explained rather than saying 500,000 plus slaves in Russia. Basically, ordinary people wouldn't agree that someone badly paid or working as a prostitute is a slave, and if some body says they are for political reasons, fine, but let's explain what the definition is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 112.198.83.40 (talk) 01:19, 28 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've updated the intro with the 2018 estimate, and added an explanation of what the Walk Free Foundation considers to be slavery-like conditions. If I'm interpreting the report correctly, it doesn't include all adult prostitution, but it does include any people who are forced to engage in prostitution (including children, who legally can't give consent). The article Global Slavery Index is linked and goes into criticism of that data source. I was unable to find any other conflicting sources, though I did not have time to do an in-depth search. Hopefully that resolves the NPOV dispute and better enables readers to make up their own minds about the severity of the problem, though more perspectives and a more detailed breakdown would be welcome. -- Beland (talk) 18:02, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The article also includes references to external links that describe high mortgage payments as a form of "financial slavery". This is yet another misleading connection given the meaning of the word slavery as used in the title of the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Juanca911 (talkcontribs) 12:21, 26 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Juanca911: I'm not seeing such links in a spot check; perhaps they have been removed? -- Beland (talk) 15:43, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, actually it looks like you removed them; thanks for that! -- Beland (talk) 15:44, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Who ever wrote this article knows shit about slavery in Russia[edit]

Peter the Great didn't abolish slavery, you idiot, he created new ones segregated to land or factory. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:e000:1313:8858:3c5e:6962:d98:ef2f (talkcontribs) 20 March 2019 (UTC)
